where to paint and how best
I have a 97 sc300 one of the few 5 speeds left.
car needs a paint job pretty bad scratches everywhere. (like it was in a barn full of cats running on it)
does any one know where i can get it painted in NYC area. also when i do go to paint it what questions should i ask and what answers should i expect and how much would it cost.
do i just go with a paint over or do i need to tell them to fully sand the car prime and paint. anyone done a good paint job that will last and can give me some tips.
thanks all.

Are they deep scratches? Because when I think "barn full of cats running on it" I think of light scratches that may come out, not "four ex girlfriends armed with freshly cut bmw keys" lol I can't help you out with places to paint since I'm pretty far (SoCal), you can try google or Yelp for reviews of local shops, but here's something I just saw and I would imagine the cost to be around the same.
Also, if you planned to paint the door jams/hood etc. it will bring the price up some more.
There'll be places that'll paint your car for $1,000 or less but a legit paint job proper prepping getting your door jams and whatnot be prepared to spend 4000 +. You get what you pay for though and a proper paint job is something you don't want to cheap out on. Another option you could go with is vinyl wrap doing. That's more affordable

I was told I can pay 2k but the guy doesn't have a booth and he won't sand down the old and prime the car. He did a great job when my 93 got hit in the bumper but I don't know about full paint job.
I thought about wrapping it. It's cheaper and I have so many options and can be easily changed. I keep seeing a matte black s550 which looks hot so it crossed my mind

how about you upload some pics and we'll see if it has gone only through the clear coat or all the way through the base coat. because if it's only clear coat you can buff it out and reclear. If actual base coat is only missing on say the bumpers then you can just get that repainted and it will be much cheaper. a full respray of a car is anywhere above $2k. you could always just plastidip the car for like 400 bucks. (here come the old dudes saying it looks like ***** and haven't seen the recent advancements in peelable paint)

Will need pics before I can give you a detailed description of what you can do to resurrect your paint job. Vinyl wrap or plasti dip seem to be an acceptable option now days also, just not for me. I'm one of the afor mentioned old guys. LOL! One of our NYC members will have to chime in to recomend a shop in your area. Sounds like it may require a full paint job, with trim, bumper cover removal, sand, primer, and full paint for best results. This of course, will cost a pretty penny.

Paint is a very subjective topic. I am sure the NYC area has reputable shops so Yelp can be a start but references are the best way to go....
Budget plays into your choices. When our SC (a '92) got it's repaint it was a 3 week process and around a $4K investment ($5700 with body kit included). We like the OEM color and went with that so we avoided door jams and engine bay challenges (which kept the cost reasonable).
