Who will be joining me
Next year my 92 400 will be 25 years old which means she can be registered as a classic and it will no longer need to be inspected except for safety equipment. What this means is my car no longer has to have the emissions checked so therefore I can do whatever I want.
So i was wondering, how many of you guys/gals will be joining me in becoming a classic next year?

CA hates emissions.
Only exemptions are:
Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?
Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:
Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
Diesel powered 1997 year model and older or with a Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR) of more than 14,000 lbs
Electric
Natural gas powered with a GVWR rating of more than 14,000 lbs.

Illinois has the same rule. Once a car reaches 25 years old, it can still be registered normally, or you can apply for expanded use antique vehicle plates, or antique vehicle plates.
Antique plates have restrictions but are ridiculously cheap.
Expanded use antique vehicle plates are the best deal. 50% the cost of normal plates and the only restriction is that the car can only be driven to and from car events during winter months.

I live in colorado but I keep my car registered in florida, not to sure how long I'll be able to pull that off, I wonder what would happen if I got pulled over.
I'm happy for the people who don't live in a liberal state and put up with emissions.

I'm a cop in Susquehanna, PA and I just discovered that because the population there is so small, they're exempt from emissions. So if you register you car in a place with a tiny population, you too could be set free
I never knew about this, until I tried to get my car inspected the other day, and they asked me "Where's your car registered?" ... Im like, "Umm, PA; why?" ...Then they looked at the Reg. and were like, "Nope, sorry; it says you need Emissions, and we don't do that here; no shop does". ... So I asked why, and found out.
Except now I have to drive all the way to Lackawanna County (1hr) just to have my car Inspected + Emissions.

I wish I could say I'm exempted from emissions right now
CA residents love and acknowledge classics. I have seen some "Historic" plates on everything from 60's cars to 20's and 30's cars with rumble seats. It's the state that just doesn't give anyone a break even if their car is 25 years old or more unless it's 1975 or older.
There is a very cool late 60's period correct classic plate that just became available. Black color with yellow text. I'm looking forward to getting one of those.
^^ ALL of the above for CA residents...
I've thought that eventually when I see the individual components improve and come down in cost enough to afford a 300hp setup I might attempt a stick-shifted EV converted SC to take the draconian emission rules to their logical stopping point. Nothing in CA's rules to get in your way on that front (subjectivity of the silent experience aside)-- only the reality of crap battery technology and an extremely spotty chance of refueling or making road trips
Not for my current SC though. The SC/JZ combination is such a great experience. And as is the cars are approaching classic status. It will be cool to see more of them in some counties being eligible for "classic", "historic" or "antique" plates.

3 of my SCs are 1992 ... comes January , no more emissions or inspections required . Exactly the reason why I chose the 1992s. And the 1 of 120 , 1997 5 speed will be registered in a non emission county here in GA so no emission and inspection required either .
I love visiting California since got tons of friends and relatives there but I will never give up GA for CA ... vehicle registration policies is one of the reasons why. Looks like it is a money making business with all the requirements set forth above. I wonder why they have to be different from most state of the country ?

Many counties in Illinois with lower population do not require emissions testing. If you are one of the lucky ones who lives in a densely populated county, you get a PO Box outside the county and register the car there. Seen it done quite often. I'll have to wait til 2022 for antique plates. I can hardly wait. Lol
