Hey folk, I recently bought a 1998 SC300 from a friend with the intention of doing a 2jz-ge NA-T setup. My friend told my that I should do it on the 2jz after 1998 because the bottom end is weak on the 2jz motors after 1997. Not that I don't believe him, but I've searched on the internet and haven't found anything suggesting this. I'm a noob to the 2jz world and this is just my play thing. Anyone have any input?

Default Being cheap.

Yup my friend is absolutely correct. I'm just going to save for a gte and CD009 swap and sell the factory engine/tranny for a few hundred bucks.

Dude,

You want a non-VVTI 2jzge. In other words, you want the earlier 1992 to 1997 2jzge.

^^ If the intention were to do an NA-T setup without building the rotating assembly, yes.

DarthShaka, you technically CAN still use the engine you have but it would require that you rebuild and replace the rods and pistons with stronger parts.

Since you're in Florida you can use any engine combination you want. You can buy a used 2JZ-GE 92-97 engine and NA-T that or you can get a JDM 2JZ-GTE or JDM 1JZ-GTE (the 1JZ VVT-i in particular) and install that.

Apart from the R154 the CD009 is a good choice with a lot of support. So is the Aisin AR5.

Other than some chassis harness wiring differences your 1998 SC300 can take the same modifications any other SC can. It's mostly just the stock engine that has weaker rods and pistons that make it less of an NA-T candidate out of the box.

in japan they come on a 1jz, your lucky because florida does not have emissions so you can easily get away with just a 1jz r154 swap, but a 2jz with a r154 has more low end touqe.

if you live in a state with clean air act program, where they think cars are killing the earth and nothing else is. they won't let you register a 1jz or 2jzgte with no egr. even if it passes the sniffer lol.

I was just wondering if they came on the stock 2jzgte. I'm about to pull mines and replace it with a rebuilt racing transmission. Don't want to have issues when i increase the power

pur4orm, as mikef noted the R154 was only paired from the factory with 1JZ-GTE engines in Japan. In the USA we got an earlier version of the R154 paired to the 7M-GTE engine in MKIII Supra Turbos-- which have to be converted to bolt up to the 1JZ and 2JZ.

You can find whole 1JZ-GTE + R154 engine sets online. Be sure to look up the visual differences between the R154 and W58. Importers sometimes put W58's onto GTE engines to sell.

If you are going to go with any kind of turbocharged engine setup then you should be looking into an R154 or alternatively a Nissan CD009 or Aisin AR5 (Pontiac Solstice) transmissions (the latter two use kits to adapt to JZ engines).

If you are looking to stay with an automatic then you can use a built Supra Turbo A340E 4-speed to handle the power.
