Can the power steering/alternator tradgedy be avoided?
I own a 93 SC400 with 99K on it.
I have read multiple posts about the leaking power steering pump, that then takes the alternator down with it. Is there any way to avoid this? How do I tell if the pump is leaking (exactly what area of the engine would I notice a leak?).
I'd prefer to be proactive with this problem, than to wait for it to become a large and expensive problem.

yes it can!
when the power steering pump leaks it's usually pretty obvious so just keep an eye on the pump itself (@ the left of the engine bay right behind the fluid resivoir and the coolant resivoir if you are looking from the front)if it is leaking there will be grime buildup on the pump and of course when it gets bad there would be fluid on the bottom cover of the engine bay.
you can rebuild the pump yourself for pretty cheap and it's really simple. lexus sells a rebuild kit for around $30. or if possible you can take apart the pump and then match up the oring sizes at the hardware store for about 35 cents! a lot more reasonable then the $400+ for a pump from the dealer. I rebuilt my pump in about 15min. it would have been less but I could'nt get one bolt off.( no muscle, lol)
The trick with the pump is that you don't have to take it apart past the bearing inside. you'll only need to replace the seals outiside of bearing. I was hesitant on only replacing these myself but when i talked to a tech at toyota he said that when they have to rebuild them there that thats all they replace too. It's so easy that when I have time I 'll do it just to post pics... hope this is of some help.

I'm going to just replace the stupid seals, even if my pump is leak free.
