182ci of cast iron block weighs more than 242ci of cast aluminum. The DOE figures that cast aluminum has 58% weight reduction from cast iron, which makes the block and heads weigh less on the V8. But then you have to factor in double the engine banks and two extra pistons, none of which are aluminum parts.

There's definitely not a couple hundred lbs of difference between the motors, like lex400sc said, all alloy eight or iron block/alum head six. As for what's faster, a stick SC3 should be able to take an SC4 out of the whole pretty solid, but from a decent roll the SC4 will always win, mine doesn't keep up with Vipers like Rich's does , but there are cars i've done well against in the SC4 that I could not do anything to in the SC3. To my mind it's an excellent six compared to an eight that is mediocre-plus for all it's technology, and has practically nothing below 3000rpm. The solution is an SP63 VVT-i 6-speed ....

So Lex, when do you plan on blowing some air into that straight six of yours? We'll get to see if Vipers can keep up with you!

and if u drive like that dude said at or around 4000rpm in a V8 u will be seriously kicking tail because 300 ft-lbs of torque is in your command.

even in the automagic, all u have to do is shift down so the revvs are up and when u mush the gas pedal it will kick u hard with that much amount of torque.

of course driving around at 1-2k rpm is typical when u have it in D.

Waiting for Lar to get back from vacation or whatever it is he's actually doing in FL...
Pretty much decided on the SP63, on the fence as to A/R, but probably going to start out with the .58, easy enough to upgrade later. Vipers should not be a problem when i'm done, quarter or road course, but my need to do the body and multimedia are complicating and extending the project, and i'd prefer not to talk smack until I can back it up, but it should be lots of fun when it's done. As of now I have alot of boxes and only a few things done, lots of stuff still on the 'slow boat', just finished a very long security system install...

I just found this thread but thought I’d share an article from Car and Driver from when they originally tested the SC3 5-speed. I personally think both cars are amazing! There’s some pretty good info in the article so enjoy!

Until the photos clear you'll have to go to the link below and click on the photo once to bring up a small version and then click on that to bring up a high res version of each page.

All I have to say is, I have yet to loose to a stock 300 anything.

97 SC300
0-60mph - 7.2s
HP: 225
TQ: 210
Weight: 3538

97 SC400
0-60 - 6.8s
HP: 260
TQ: 270
Weight: 3605

http://www.edmunds.com/used/1997/le...denav..6.Lexus*

with these numbers,... not comparing a 95 SC300 to a 92 SC400,... how do you figure a SC3 is faster,... I don't EEEEEEEVEN wanna bring out the power / torque difference of a 98 - 00 SC4,.... totally azzwhoopin' and the weight difference here is 67 lbs,... not a couple of hundred. I doubt at a rate of 1hp per lb gain in weight reduction gives the competitive advantage considering the SC3 is spec'd slower 0-60 anyways,.. and even if that was for an auto,.... hwy rollin',... I have murdered the IS300 ( posted about in the racin forum against a vette C5,.. 3 way race,... only 2 participants up to 148mph,... poor 300 so far back, couldn't even see him any more, and we took off from 70 or so ),... and I can't count how many SC300's I've yanked down from 50mph or so and up...and we won't eeeeeven mention the RIP GS300's,... my homeboy who has one doesn't even want to be found on the same stretch of hwy as me as many times as he's gotten dusted!

OK i have owned both, and have taken both to the track BONE STOCK

here are the numbers:

92 SC400 with 73k miles ran at best - 15.67@89 Mph (13.92@102 on 100 shot

My 95 SC300 5spd BONE STOCK, i managed a 15.08@91.5 Mph

and about the weight, i weighed in at the track with the sc400 @ 3930 (with me, a system, and 18" rims, i never weighed bone stock)

my sc300 weighed in at 3690 bone stock with me in it.

Red face yawwwwnnn some more...

Ok,... 97 SC400 with slick inside rear tires from misalignment, 100K miles on original plugs, no mods, sound system, chrome 18's, and poor launches,... 15.3 @ 90.74mph and 15.47 @ 91.97mph,... so there's a big difference between 15.67 @ 89mph and we're talkin' 10hp difference. Now, the 101mph 15.08 sounds suspect as hell when AgGS400 and Jbrady were with me that same nite I was at the track in their GS400's and LS400's and were doin' like 14.7 and I believe maybe 14.5 at 96 or 97mph,... so I think not... and we posted about our track times in this post.

You guys have piqued my interest. I think I'm going to have to track my car now. I don't believe it's a 16-second car, sure doesn't feel like one. Are you guys launching right? You know you aren't just supposed to watch for green then mash the pedal til you reach the end, right? Anyone have ACTUAL timeslips for their quarter miles too? I see numbers, but I won't bank on them until I see slips.
