Default Need help deciding on next car.

I'm faced with two tough choices to make very soon. I'm looking to purchase either a brand new 03' MINI Cooper S for 24K or a 98' SC400, black on black with 60K miles for 18,900. I have already owned a 95 Sc400 black on black and loved it until it was totaled (not my fault). Just having a hard time deciding and wanted to hear some educated, unbiased opinions.

Jerry

Those Mini Coopers are pretty cramped inside and I can't imagine it'd offer much protection in a high speed collision. I think you know first hand that those kinds of collisions are sometimes beyond our control too. Plus they are fairly new cars, there's no telling how well they'll hold up over time. The SC400 is a sure shot. Besides, how fun is a 1.6 liter I-4 with 115hp and 0-60 acceleration in 8.5 seconds?

Lexus= power, safety, reliability
Mini= slower, smaller, unknown reliability, plus it costs more.
Sure, the mini is probably more fun in the corners in a go kart sort of way, but which one would you rather take a 1,000 mile road trip in?
I would go for the Lexus. If you just have to try something different, I would go for a Subaru WRX, IMO.
Most important part is that you are happy with your choice no matter what people say.
I have to admit though, SC300TURBO's ride is one of the best. If I had the $, I would go for that.

The mini is just a popular fad for now,
just like then the new vw bug came out everyone wanted on.
now how popular are the bugs now?
the Mini is prolly gonna have electrical problems, base on the fast that it's being made by bmw, and every bmw owner I've talked with has had electrical problems.

if you don't do alot of long drives and live somewhere parking spots are rare and if you are shorter and skinny then I would go with the mini.

If you are anything taller than 5'9" and drive for extended hours frequently and have no worry about parking then I would go with the 98SC4.

Default oh jeez

Oh cmon... Its not even a question.... The SC400 is superior to basically ANYTHING on the road today. The 98-00 models are quick as all hell, and will definitely keep your thrill-factor intact long after the mini has faded.

Spend your 24K for a 98 or newer SC400 with the 290HP VVTI V8. In addition, Lexus is known for quality, reliability and service.

J.D. Power: Quality Stays the Same
Date Posted 05-15-2003
In contrast to years of improving quality numbers in the annual J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, the 2003 results just in don't show an overall improvement by the world's automakers. This year's overall winner in the quality competition was Toyota for the fourth straight year; Lexus was a big help in the win, since it logged just 76 problems per 100 new cars last year. Both Toyota and Honda's results declined somewhat, though, and only 15 car makes ranked above average in the survey, which registered 133 problems per 100 cars as its average score for this year. Mini's Cooper compact ranked low in initial quality because of lots of complaints about its cupholders, while GM's Hummer H2 was the worst ranked SUV largely because of its gas mileage of about 12 mpg
