Default Find a newer VVT-i SC400 or do the work needed on mine?

My SC400 needs abouit 2 g's in work to get it totally up to par. Considering its dwindling value and the cost of repairs, I'm wondering if there's enough reason to buy a 1998+ SC400. Does anyone know how much faster the car is with a VVT-i? My car will run a 14.9 without the Torque convertor upgrade, and I'm wondering if the newer one already has a sportier TC.

Essentially, do you guys think it's worth it to drop another 10-15 grand for the '98+?

You would only gain about .4-.5 in the 1/4 mile with the newer model. What is wrong with your current one? What is the mileage? If the "go-fast" parts of your car are ok and the problems are more cosmetic, keep it.

Do what I'm in the process of doing. Upgraded ECU, TC and nitrous, along with better, bigger rubber and wheels. Those upgrades will give you a 13 sec. car for a lot less than purchasing a 98+ SC400. Plus you "know" your current car and its quirks -- you are entering into the unknown with someone else's car.

I'm not knocking the 98+ models. They are great. But money doesn't grow on trees. You can do a lot with the extra cash --- house stuff, vacations, savings for the future/retirement, a 2nd cheap "beater" car, etc, etc, etc.

Whoops, Mad Max, sorry --I didn't notice the upgrades you listed in your signature before I sent my reply. Regardless, I still say keep it. Put some more toys in your current SC and make it rock!

...once again, think of what you can do with all the extra $$$ you won't plunk down on a newer SC...$5-15k is a lot of cash...

I say got for the VVTi, theres nothing like a newer car with higher potential... But if your going for ALL GO then I would invest in the TC, Nitrous and ECU upgrade... good luck
