Don't believe those "OiI change indicator" lights that supposedly come on after an analysis of driving style and tell you when to change the oil. One of the reasons (among others) that BMW is having to replace so many engines is that their customers DO wait until those lights come on and tell them it is time to change oil....typically, as you say, at 10, 000 miles or so.
Those lights are set up by engineers who program them take into account the number of cold starts, stop-and-go trips, average speed, engine load and temperature, transmission shifts, etc..... but in real life it often jst isn't enough. Change the oil and filter every 3 months/3000 miles and you should be OK.
