Okay so I dug up this 23 year old thread only so i dont have to start a new one. I just came across this situation and my car has never had a CEL before so this was strange. My car currently has no problems except for a mild exhaust leak. Ive come to a conclusion that its probably my o2 sensor based on the information.
I have a 97 300, anybody have another opinion?

yes first of all you must check the codes.
Second of all my guess is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with your car at all.
I once took off my intake to clean the throttle body and the check engine light and trac light came on at the same time.
This is just the computer realising something is wrong with the intake and or trac system (they are right beside eachothwer) and its letting you know to look into it.
My guess is the ecu will realize eventually it is ok and the light will stay off.
Your new air filter probably is allowing much more air in or something different than the stock and the ecu thinks there is a problem---which of course there is not.
But check the codes asap to be safe.
good luck
