Welding aluminum is a bit harder.. I wouldn't recommend starting out straight away on your end tanks. It takes a lot more learning and practice than steel. Also, you will need pure argon, new rollers and a teflon conduit. Helps if your welder has a separate inductance setting for al too. Otherwise, I would just get a pro weldor to do it.. they'd probably do it for like $50.

why wont the TRD short shifter for the soarer work? isnt it the same trans?

You can... It doesnt shorten your throws like a short shifter does because the pivot point is the same.
