Teacher! Question: Now that you have a better digicam, which components are most responsible for flickering needles?

OOOOOOOOOOOOKKKKK Here we go.......

There are 3 main parts to a cluster. The face, the motherboard, and the framework.

Within the framework we have all the bulbs, ribbons, and mounts for everything. It is the "Home Base" for everything to be assembled and locked in. As you can see from this picture, many different colors can be used to cover the bulbs, however i highly suggest you find a cover that can withstand severe heat as these bulbs can literally melt your fingers after less than 5 minutes.

On our faceplate the motors for the needles are mounted. The motors are a self contained Motor, contact center, and control unit with PCB mounted to the rear on the two more sophisticated needles (tach, speedo). On the other two they are controled off the mainboard.

We have two plugs at the bottom that are for the ODO and time. The plugs run from a microchip that houses roughly 64 pins and does over 10,000 functions per second. It is a combination of AND, OR, NOR, X-nor, X-or, and NAND gate technology. The chip is associated with an encoder and decoder to change digital to analog, and vice versa so it may control not only the heated elements that are used in the displays, but also the microchips around it.

The top of the cluster houses three ribbons as seen here. These three ribbons are the only contacts for all of the bulbs in the entire cluster. If any of them become brittle and break, or are not plugged in correctly. some of the lights will not function. You can unplug these three ribbons and the cluster will run in stealth mode. The only thing that will light is the needle's.

Here you can see how the bulbs connect with the ribbons. A lot of people are quick to blame the contacts on the ribbon, however the bulbs itself and the filament inside is to blame for misfired attempts to illuminate. If you experience this problem, replace the bulb. There are only certain circumstances where the contacts are not at fault, and we will have to determine that on an individual basis. Either way, a quick smack to the top of the dash usually clears things up
