problems some more common than others..

-power steering pump,
-some people times the high-pressure hose too
-leaking power steering rack
-Speedo lights and needles going out
-condensation in the head lights (re-seal them or replace)
-a/c compressors sometimes go out on at least the sc300 don't know about the sc4
-some problems with the power windows
-heard of some problems with the power seats.
-climate control bulbs burn out.
-door hinge's
-trunk supports
-12 disk cd changers - skips, doesn't play cd-r's or doesn't change cd's in some cases (mine was fine)
-bushings go bad and should be replaced

other things too =P I just can't think of them

problems that I personally had were:

main drive pulley broke replaced
power window switch went out.replaced
a/c compressor went out replaced
power steering pump needed to be resealed
high pressure hose needed to be replaced
manual tranny replaced
climate control light bulbs replaced
trunk supports replaced
headlights had condensation in them and need to be replaced
my bushings are going too.

Go 400 unless you truly are gonna turbo/supra swap your 300. 400 has more power, and just as luxurious as the 300. IMO, 5 spd 300 is the only SC300 worth getting.

On the flip side of the problems pointed out by SDSC300, remember, you get what you pay for. I agree about the 400 over the 300 but both have their positive point. Do a search like the men said since there are many opinions on CL. As to getting what you pay for, look at the service records, get the SC checked out by someone you trust and look for the defects SDSC300 mentioned. Me, I was really lucky since my 95 came from a home that cared for it and maintained it VERY well.

When you go shopping for your SC remember, cheap is not best and for a nickle more you can go first class. Just my $.02.....

Welcome!

I know there's a lot of material out there to search through, so I thought I'd put up a couple of threads for you to start with.

I searched using keywords like "which buy sc300 or sc400 best" and came across a few useful threads:

acks2lex,
I had a 91 LS coupe 5-speed and then a 94 LS coupe 6-speed. What problems is your car suffering? To be honest, if your Legend has "way to many problems" that you can put up with your SCx00 will have just as many problems. And SCx00 problems tend to be more EXPENSIVE to repair. In any case, I get ~21-23mpg in 90% local / 10% freeway driving in my SC400 which was about the same as my 91 5-speed and a little less then the 24-26mpg in the 94 6-speed.

Good luck with your search and welcome.

Regards

So I'll got back to a point made earlier, DID YOU BUY A BARGIN SC, and overlook these items or did they all come up/break while you owned the SC..... After you bought it in good condition.. Anyone out there thinking you're going to find a bargin cherry SC, good luck and keep looking..... Of course if in a divorce settlement that the wife is really pissed at the old man because he treated his SC better that her.... Sound familiar to anyone.....
