I remember seeing a pic on this site from someone who did exactly that. I believe they were aftermarket parts (not the original stock), but it blended VERY well with the rest of the wood trim. I know this isnt much help. But at least we know that a solution for this problem does exist.

I have tools, let's carve something up

a little oak, some sanding, some stain... maybe a billet part on it here and there

Yes, but the thread was posted by an SC400 owner. That picture is of a manual SC300. Our SC400's have an overdrive button on the side. This makes aftermarket shifters extremely hard to come by.

Any ideas for the SC400?

Oops... didn't notice that. He said "gear" shift and I just thought...

Anyway, I don't know what's under the leather on those *****, but if it's metal or hard plastic, it might be possible to veneer them. If somebody has a spare **** to experiment on, you could strip the leather and get some real wood veneer at a local lumber shop or furniture refinisher, steam it to soften it up, and then try glueing it on with some carpenters wood glue. I would imagine it would take a few tries to get it to fit the curves properly, but I bet it could be done. The it's just a matter of staining it to match your other wood trim and sealing it with polyurethane or something.
