What should I pay for this Lexus?
Hi everyone,
I tried search and read the past 10 pages or so to get a general idea of what to expect, but I wanted to get some answers from the CL vets.
I'm looking at a 1992 Lexus SC300 5spd with about 130k miles on it. Is there anything in particular I should look out for when purchasing the car? What do you think would be a fair price to pay for this? The car needs to have the timing belt changed soon, and the clutch is original. If I purchase the car, I plan to do all the 120k major maintenance items such as plugs, fluid flushes, all belts, water pump, etc.
Are there any specific major problems I should look for? Any particular signs of future problems? I've read the FAQ and the search and the only major problem I found with SC300's was the dash lights go out? The power steering pump doesn't leak in the SC300's, correct?
Thanks in advance for your help,
-Brian.

there is no 'set' price for what you pay for an SC...these cars are timeless, and prices vary from year to year based on actual mileage and condition. You can usewww.edmunds.com or www.kelleybluebook.com for reference, but in the end its up to you.
As far as finding common failures, that is correct....some have the power steering failure, most newer models have the blacked out needles. That is not biggie since we have a member who can correct that problem (onelasttry).
You mentioned reading the FAQ, all of this is covered in there - www.intellexual.net
Good luck on your purchase

The reason why I wanted to get a general idea of how much I should pay was because SC300's 5 speeds, much like Supras, sell for higher than book value. In any case, hopefully I'll pick up this car and join the ranks of CL.
