AaronE,

not to knock you or anything but what is the reason behind you using octane 87?
isnt the sole purpose to save $? you are driving a classy and luxurious lexus coupe yet worried about 20 cents on gas?

92 is manfucturer recommended for a reason. if there's even a remote 1% chance of something bad happening to ur car, would u take it? gasoline and oil changes are something i'd not risk my engine over.

If your car doesn't downshift when hitting the kickdown switch, something's wrong with the kickdown linkage or the tranny, IMO. Mine always does, unless the downshift calls for a redlining. But I DO agree that the tranny shifts too early even with the PWR switch engaged. Nevertheless, that tranny is a far cry from many other trannies of even todays cars. We're just very picky drivers! And after all, we're driving the relentless pursuit of perfection. . .

Yes, it is to save money. I drive 500 miles a week, and $300 bucks a year for 91 vs 87 for ~5hp isn't worth it to me. If there was an off chance that it would cause engine damage, I wouldn't, but my point is that there isn't. I can hear that my car isn't knocking, so until I do, it's 87 for me. You don't spend $5 a gallon on 97 octane, do you? Why don't you? Cause it's not necessary. Some people are willing to pay an extra $4 a tank on 91 for that 5hp. More power to them (literaly!), I'm simply not one of them. I am tempted to buy a supercharger though. Go figure.

Oh, and by the way, I got 20mpg on my last tank.

And the kickdown would have caused my car to jump to 5000 RPM, so I guess it didn't want to do that. Most of the time, the kickdown works, albeit *very* slowly, especially when it involves 4th to 2nd or 3rd to 1st. On the Porsche 928 forums (my other car) people actually mod the kickdown switch so that it's always engaged. (this is done by simply shorting the switch) Has anybody done that on their SC?

When u guys mention the kickdown switch - do you mean the ECT switch???

I don't know why, but I am only getting 320 mpg maximum. What do our tanks hold on a 92 SC400?? Does this mean I am in desperate need of a tune up??

Thx guys

Peace

Our tanks hold 20.6 gallons of gas...and you might need a tune up or you might need to reset the ECU...

Nope. There's a switch under the gas pedal that closes when you push the pedal all the way to the floor. You can feel an extra "thump" at the bottom of the pedal travel. That's the switch. Basically it tells the transmission "Hey, the guy really floored it, so gimme all ya got..."

I agreed with Aaron about 87 Octane...
If anyone need more explaination, take a Thermodynamic class for Mechanical Engineering and you 'll understand.

VQT & AaronE,

Not to keep beating a dead horse but hasToyota and rest of the manufacturers taken a Thermodynamic class for Mechanical Engineering? Why do manufacturers recommend something that is unneccessary - other than the possible HP increase?

The reason I don't get Octane 97 is because it's not recommended - nor could I find it readily available.

Yes, I'm sure they all have PhDs in Thermodynamics. That's why they know how to make an engine that is tuned for 91 octane, but is smart enough to know how to detune itself slightly to run just fine on 87 octane, though with a slight loss of power.

There's far too many posts on this subject, so I'll end here, but if you search, you'll find lots of very explanatory links.

-Aaron

PS. I've also heard that they delineate their product lines by octane (i.e. Toyotas are tuned for 87, Lexus for 91) though I don't know if that's true...

I don't believe that to be true. My mother's 98 Lexus calls for regular unleaded.
