My '92 SC400 hasn't given me any problems aside from some minor stuff (mostly interior) that needed fixing due to overall age. Mechanically, I only replaced the motor/tranny mounts and the lower A-Arm bushings (I replaced the entire A-Arm because the Daizen/TM Engineering bushing weren't out when I did the fix)...and I had the Power Steering Pump rebuilt....all just a preventative measure as they didn't HAVE to be done. Other than that, it only need a fluid change (I did all the fluids). And that's only because I'm a **** SOB...I think most people would have probably just left everything alone for a while. I bought my car with 64K miles on it. I did a full test at a dealership and they said everything was pretty solid.
If you really want a SC3, I don't see why a older model (pre-97) wouldn't do...unless you really want the minor upgrades the '97+ models offer (in the SC300...I think the SC400 received the only big change...the new motor)

Just because you can spin the tires doesn't mean the car is faster.

PS. VVTi was not the only change they did in '97.5. They also used 5 speed automatic transmission. So VVTi may not the reason why '97.5+ is slower.

I raced my friends '00 SC300 automatic and he lost.

Car & Driver has the 92 - 93 SC300 5-speed zero to 60 in 6.8 seconds in their May 1992 issue full test and review. My car feels every bit of that. The 5 speed is likely to bury any stock automatic SC300 of any year. The V8 SC400 was at 6.7 seconds back then.

Just from what I have seen, it’s not always up to the car on who wins or loses... The car helps but its all comes down to the driver....
Just my 2 cents

Much less chance of driver error when you have automatic. Both myself and the other driver has almost identical start.

WRONG........only the 400's got the 5spd automatic, the 300's got the A341E, so how do you explain a car that is rated @ 10 lbs.ft. more torque and doesn't weigh any more, to be a slower car?
