My '92 SC400 hasn't given me any problems aside from some minor stuff (mostly interior) that needed fixing due to overall age. Mechanically, I only replaced the motor/tranny mounts and the lower A-Arm bushings (I replaced the entire A-Arm because the Daizen/TM Engineering bushing weren't out when I did the fix)...and I had the Power Steering Pump rebuilt....all just a preventative measure as they didn't HAVE to be done. Other than that, it only need a fluid change (I did all the fluids). And that's only because I'm a **** SOB...I think most people would have probably just left everything alone for a while. I bought my car with 64K miles on it. I did a full test at a dealership and they said everything was pretty solid.

If you really want a SC3, I don't see why a older model (pre-97) wouldn't do...unless you really want the minor upgrades the '97+ models offer (in the SC300...I think the SC400 received the only big change...the new motor)
LOL, I am just like you Manaray... I just wish I had the money as you so I could do all this that I would like to do over a shorter period of time... But soon enought I will get her the way I want her Little by little...

Lex Luthor, Now if your SC400 was a 98+ But I would think that the information floating around is wrong...

As just an example Edmunds.com reports 0 to 60 acceleration of '99 SC300 to be 8.2 sec while for a '96 SC300 it is 7.4 sec. I also belive it's been discussed before here, on clublexus.com. So use the search button to find it.

Just because you can spin the tires doesn't mean the car is faster. I raced my friends '00 SC300 automatic and he lost.

Chris

PS. VVTi was not the only change they did in '97.5. They also used 5 speed automatic transmission. So VVTi may not the reason why '97.5+ is slower.

Just from what I have seen, it’s not always up to the car on who wins or loses... The car helps but its all comes down to the driver....

Just my 2 cents

Car & Driver has the 92 - 93 SC300 5-speed zero to 60 in 6.8 seconds in their May 1992 issue full test and review. My car feels every bit of that. The 5 speed is likely to bury any stock automatic SC300 of any year. The V8 SC400 was at 6.7 seconds back then.

Much less chance of driver error when you have automatic. Both myself and the other driver has almost identical start.

Well just say you both do have autos... One can use the auto and one can manually shift an auto and that would make a diff... I am not saying like night and day, but it would help...

WRONG........only the 400's got the 5spd automatic, the 300's got the A341E, so how do you explain a car that is rated @ 10 lbs.ft. more torque and doesn't weigh any more, to be a slower car?

Regardless of what the stats say, It’s newer, nicer & even more refined then the older ones. I love my 92 but would jump on a 97+ in a heartbeat if I had the chance.

Guess you're right on that one; however, '97.5+ is still slower.
