No, the ECU 89661-24370 is specifically for a 1995 SC300 Automatic with California Emissions.

For a 1996 SC300 manual trans with California Emissions you would need ECU P/N 89661-24470

Unfortunately we still do not have a confirmed ECU part number in our master list for a 1996 SC300 with manual transmission and Federal Emissions.

I would recommend calling a Lexus dealer parts counter with your SC's VIN number and getting them to confirm the correct ECU part number for you if you do not have a CA Emissions manual '96 model. To know which emissions type the car originally came with just look at the label on the underside of the hood's lip.

If it is not too much trouble and if you happen to call them to find out, please let us know what part number they give you? They will give you an ECU part number with "-84" attributed to the end of the original number set to denote that it will be an OEM remanufactured ECU that they are quoting you for.

You'll be able to find a used ECU based on the part number they give you with some patience and looking. It would be surprising if they still have any left in stock but at a considerable cost there is that option if they still do. Also Tanin Auto can sometimes find replacement ECUs for our vehicles though it is much harder with manual ECUs.

For reference (manual transmission only)

89661-24360
89661-24380 CALIFORNIA SPEC (01/1994 - 07/1995)
89661-24470 (08/1995 - 07/1996)
89661-24520 (08/1996 - 11/1996)
89661-24521 (12/1996 - 08/1997)

Warning: even though the above is probably correct, as KahnBB6 says always verify using your VIN.

Thank you!! These are ECU part numbers by build date and not just model year, correct?

I will update them into the master list for reference shortly with notes that they still need to be verified.

Yes, OP, I recommend you still use your VIN to verify you have the correct ECU part number. Either that or just pull up the passenger side carpet and look at the part number on your ECU’s casing (if the original is still installed).

Also, I recommend with any of these ECU’s:

Get a roll of totally clear package tape and cut slightly overlapping strips to CAREFULLY lay over the original ECU P/N identifying labels.

This is to stabilize them from further deterioration. Toyota printed them on a type of thermal sticker paper which tends to fade and deteriorate over time to the point of the printed information becoming eventually illegible. Carefully applying the clear packing tape can stop or at least drastically slow down this degradation process.

Additionally I also use a Brother label maker to print out my own additional label strips for any ECUs that I have: P/N, model year, brand, model, engine, transmission and emissions type.

A little overkill never hurts

Yes, but really they are the same. For example (08/1995 - 07/1996) is a 1996 model. No other years, just 1996. Every new model production starts in august and ends in July.*

*for this era of Lexus and Toyota don't know how they do things now.

Technically there should be four for the 1997 SC300 model year: Federal Automatic, California Automatic, Federal Manual and California Manual. Unfortunately it's still not a complete list of ECUs for all the 1st gen SC model years.

I've learned not to fully trust the Toyota parts catalogue when it comes to ECUs. I've run across situations where the part number shown for a particular production date is not what was actually in the car. And I was certain the ECU was original. It gets even more hazy when it comes to California emissions. It gets REALLY confusing on new-ish models you have multiple countries of origin and multiple suppliers. Still way better than American made cars, their parts system and parts in general is a giant cluster bleep of epic proportions.

Well if that's a supersession, then there could be as many as 8 ecus for 1997.

There are 4 for 1996 alone. And I knew there was 4 overall in 1997 because of emissions.
Supposedly Cali ecus only went away when VVTI was introduced but that just may be FB talk. I can't remember how many ecus Supras got in 98. I know for certain there are no Cali GTE ecus in 1998 because the car was banned by CARB

This is interesting. I wonder if this is related to the new factory. The old sequence of VINs ends in the late spring of 97 and the new sequence begins.
