I swear I’ve tried to search for this answer. Just got a ‘93 for my 14yo son.
What is this slot for? I’ve seen pictures like this with something plugged into it. My son’s SC’s slot is empty. I know I’m going to feel stupid but I gave up trying to figure it out.
Edit: Flip out cup holder?

^^ You got it. On all 1992-2000 model years it was either an empty slot with a blank in back that could fit whatever you wanted to put in there... or it could be optioned with a factory fold-out cupholder (which tends to be far more useful and better placed in manual transmission SC's where the center console cupholder is borderline useless since placing a cup there interferes with shifting gears).
I picked up one of the factory fold-out cupholder units on eBay a few years ago and find it to be quite useful so long as the drink isn't extremely heavy or extremely tall. It's useful to put a small iced tea cup with a lid and straw there or a lidded cup of morning coffee.
In the Japan market Soarer RHD version of these cars (with the same interior as the SC, just in a mirror image) some owners would fit small, thin aftermarket electronics such as a turbo timer or boost controller in that location.
There was, however, an aftermarket universal VSM mount made for it by Pro-Fit International. They may or may not sell that part any longer in their catalog. It's good quality. I'm posting a picture of how I used mine some years back. With the VSM surface you can install any type of VSM mounting accessory that will fit onto it. Also see the two thread links below for more details on it.
The part numbers that I used were:
Pro-Fit LX-53-92
Arkon APGN-VSM

Thanks guys. My guess that it was a cup holder was an edit after I initially posted.
It’s funny, after thinking about it for a while and deciding to post the question, actually posting it made me come up with my best guess. Fear of ridicule. 🤪
