Unhappy 97' Manual SC (Speedo/Odo not working)

Hey all,

I have a 1997 Lexus SC300 Factory Manual, there are no CEL, ABS, Trac or any lights on the dash.

My speedometer and Odometer stopped working while I was driving. The odometer is blank.
Speedometer is at 0 mph, and my cruise control also doesn't work. It was working earlier.

What can this be and how can I fix this?

Send your gauge cluster off to Tanin Auto Electronix. It's a fairly common issue and they fixed mine.

^^ Seconding Thomas GS4's suggestion to allow Tanin Auto to repair your cluster. Since it's from a 5-speed you will have to send it in as they do not carry spare clusters in stock except for the A/T SC's. They do carry spare Speedometer and Tachometer motors in stock for repairs of all 1992-2000 instrument clusters. While it's in their care it's a good idea to have them look over the OEM water temp and OEM fuel gauges, all backlighting and all the needles which they can repair and/or upgrade as necessary per your request.

Also... this could *potentially* be a failure of the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) located on the side of your W58 transmission. You could order a new one from from Toyota/Lexus (try MyLParts, McGoerge Toyota or Amayama first for better pricing). Those speed sensors are rare to fail but it can happen theoretically. Also check the wiring at that sensor on the transmission in case something damaged the harness there or if it became unplugged... or even if the OEM connector itself broke apart and needs replacing.

The speedometer only gets its signal from the VSS sensor on the transmission. The odometer gets its signals from both the VSS sensor on the transmission *and* from one of the front wheel ABS sensors with redundancy in mind by Toyota engineers... so both of those things failing at the same time would be extremely unlikely.

In all likelihood you are experiencing a cluster issue as eventually the motors do fail and require replacement or repair and occasionally some SC odometer readouts do go blank and require their own repairs. Tanin does all of that.

This is not a speedometer issue, the speedometer is your “test light” showing you there’s an issue. The cruise control has no relation to the cluster so you need to check fuses first and go from there. You have fuses under the hood and in the drivers kick panel. Check ALL.
