Hoops, if it's making the noise when idling or driving it's probably not heat expansion/contraction. It's probably something slightly loose (could even be the heat shields) that is vibrating.

Try popping the hood with the engine idling and move around under the hood to see if you can isolate where the noise is coming from. Would help if you can get someone else behind the wheel to vary the rpms until the noise shows up.

MY 1994 SC400 also makes this irritating ticking and popping sound whenever I turn it off. At first I thought something was going to blow, but now i've gotten used to it and it doesnt bother me that much. BUT, I would expect Lexus to do something about it because I havn't heard many other cars with this noise.
