The center main drive shaft bearing change went extremely well. I replaced botht the transmission mount and the bearing. Did not have to completely disassemble the exhaust, just disconnected the mufflers, and lowered them down enough to get the shaft out. Supported the exhaust with long jackstands.
The driveshaft had been making a ticking noise for over a year now, and Lexus could not diagnose it, nor fix it, other than to recommend a complete driveshaft replacement for appx $1,400. When I asked the tech why, he did not know what was wrong, just that it should be replaced. So I researched it, and after much research, and help from Andrew Vlamos, I checked the center main bearing, and found it to be making a clunking noise when I pushed up on it.
One thing that shocked me was how much the old transmission mount had sagged. When we took it off (the rubber on the old mount seemed in very good shape), I placed it next to the new mount. I was flabbergasted- the difference in height of the rubber mounts was over 1/4 inch!!!! Definitely way, way, way off!! So, the new one was definitely needed.
Since the change, the car runs so smooooooth that I just want to keep driving and driving it. Wow!!!
Well worth changing. The car drives so smooth, it feels like new again!! Lexus Heaven!!

Hey Ryan,
How hard was it to get the old bearing support off the shaft? And also how hard was it to re-align the intermediate shaft and the drive shaft?
I bought the bearing support to replace in my 92 SC400. But one of the mechanics at the Lexus dealership advised me to avoid trying to just replace the bearing support, and rather replace the whole driveshaft with the support bearing already assembled.
He said it is nearly impossible to get the old bearing support off the shaft (due to years of heat friction and corrosion). He also said it is crucial and very intricate to get the two shafts realigned together when reassembling the two halfs.
Personally the job did not seem to difficult to me, but after talking to the tech, he scared me out of doing it. And now I am wondering if I should just get a new drive shaft or go with the bearing support replacement.
OLT,
If I get scared out of just replacing the bearing support, I can sell you mine if interested.
Thanks
