Default Oil sucking / burning through PCV valve

Hello to everyone. I am fresh user of this forum and I have logged in because I would like to discuss my strange problems with my SC430.

Engine has 300 000 km (180 000 miles)

compression tested, everything OK
Engine is maintained, it is running just perfect, no imperfections.
It does not have oil consumption, nor water comnsumption.

It just runs as intended.

But it has one strange behaviour I am at loss what can it cause - it is sucking engine oil through PCV valve like there is no tomorrow.
Result of that is that there is so strong oil burning smoke from exhausts, the car is non usable.

There is new PCV valve and new grommet, I have tried that of course. Original Toyota / Lexus parts.
I am driving this car with PCV venting to atmosphere and blocked hose that connects it to intake.

With this setup, car does not have any smoke from exhaust, runs great and even passed emission test twice.

I am using the car like that - with PCV venting to atmosphere - for a long time. I would just really like to solve it, but not me and noone around has got any clue what can it cause.

We have tried engine flush, but to no success. I am trying to re connect PCV valve once in a while and everytime it immediately sucks oil and starts smoking from exhaust like crazy.

Has anyone encountered something like this?

Thank you and have a nice day

Mojzo,

If you have the pcv venting to the atmophere doesn't it vent oil as well which which spray all over the engine? Also, can you clearly see white smoke constantly from the exhaust when its connected? I did some research and there is a crankcase vent filter that is supposed to filter out oil before it get recirculated. I wonder if the 3uz has one of those:

You could run a catch can

I keep wondering why this is happening…could you post some pics of the routing…it makes no sense.

Google/duck duck go thinks it is a vent valve seal issue

My initial guess is the opposite side of the PVC system is not hooked up or has a faulty valve. If you do not understand how the PCV system works, there is a valve on the intake, at the back of the rectangular portion of the airbox. "I BELIEVE" (which means I am not near my manuals and could be wrong about the exact details here) that if that valve is dead or not powered/plugged in, this may cause the issue you are experiencing. Regardless, the hose on the opposite Valve cover that connects to the back of your airbox is the portion of the PCV system you need to be looking at.

If the PCV is is venting to atmosphere, there is not oil spraying all over engine. However I can feel some air pressure from it.

Yes, I can see the white smoke from exhaust when it is connected and smell of burning oil. It is unbearable. also throttle body is full of oil when it happens.

The other side of vent system is connected to intake - to that black box that is connected to main intake hose of engine.
Hose itself is not clogged and not broken.

That valve on passenger side - is it located inside that black box? Should it be one-way only? I can try to check it, we did not know that

"Google/duck duck go thinks it is a vent valve seal issue"

Do you mean that PCV Valve Grommet? That is replaced for brand new, no change in behavior

Does the oil get on your air filter? Since you say the engine is not consuming any oil I wonder if it could be that your catalyc convertor is failing and not able to convert the smoke before it goes out the exhaust. Does it smell like sulfur/rotten eggs?

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation is the valve on the drivers side, and the hose on the passenger side that connects from the valve cover to the intake. The PCV valve itself is only half of the entire system. Look on you tube for videos on "PCV Valve System" and how it works and that will give you a much better understanding as to what "might" be going on. Good Luck.

Did you check for the obvious...too much oil in the crankcase? Sometimes dipsticks aren't accurate. Drain and fill with 5.5 qts (with a new filter).

it sounds like you have an issue that needs addressing (i'm not sure what exactly), but once you get that sorted, a catchcan can be very helpful for keeping the intake tract clean. These cars seem to make quite a bit of mess in the intake manifold.

A catch can is a band-aide solution for blow-by caused by, warn rings/pistons/cylinders, or for use on racing engines. It is not necessary for normally operating engines.

Even on a properly working engine a catch can has its place. It just helps keep oil residue out of the intake tract. If you have a lot of oil, then you have an engine issue like you mentioned, but some oil vapor will always be coming out of the PCV even on young, healthy engines. No reason to allow that into intake/manifold/etc.
