My goodness, that's really something there... I know for the 1999 Mercedes S500 (W220) that was the first car (or one of the first) to have a fiber optics communication system between the front and back computers of the car. Idk why you'd need that kind of speed in an automotive application. Maybe for the engine controls sure, but copper signals still move at the speed of light. Honestly I find it amazing that cars have as much wiring/technology in them as they do. You'd not think it from the outside.

The discrete Ecu's was why Canbus was invented.
The movement now is to geographic ECU's (left front, right front....). That's because processor power has caught up with the demand. If you believe the story, it saves many miles of copper wiring.

My favorite part is that it tells you where each ECU is located and a rough description of what it does
