I am packing the car the night before we leave and I am thinking that there would be a lot more room behind the seats if the rear seat bottom was replaced with a shelf. I popped the seat bottom out, filed the depressions with hard styrofoam chips in plastic bags to level it out. Top that with a couple of moving blankets to pad and then cut a trunk floorboard from a MB that I had lying around because I don't throw anything away. It worked great for the trip. I might have to look for the interior bits from a SL to see if they would make the space look more finished.
Lunch stop on the Columbia River, Oregon. Dalles Dam Visitor Center.
Pacific Coast Hwy 101, Oregon. Heceta Head Lighthouse.
California Redwoods. Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway.
UltraGauge
Left column gauges top to bottom: instant mpg, mpg since engine start, mpg since trip reset (I do at fill-up), average mpg since gauge was installed in this car.
Right column gauges top to bottom: mph (calibrated after new 45 series tires), gallons used since trip reset, miles since trip reset, distance to empty.
Speedometer shows 61mph , ultragauge shows the correct speed of 65.5 mph.
There is a RV park on the north side of that bridge that we have stayed in. Beautiful location. Love that drive. My solution for the space requirement would have been to tell the dear wife. You need to take less crap

Yes, less crap is the solution. Who needs more than one pair of socks or two pair of pants unless the trip is over 6 months.........

Nice mod. I would take the seat backs out and do the same thing you did to the bottom. Then I would buy some black pleather (or leather) and cover the MDF. It would have a finished look
Lexus used to sell a kit to do this exact thing, but they are very rare and impossible to find. It was called a "Cruising Shelf" and you could open little compartments to store stuff where the seats are.
I spent about an hour making the shelf on the night before we left for 2 weeks. Made a pattern out of cardboard. I will look into a nicer solution for the bottom and the rear seat backs. It lowered the bottom enough so we could get the fridge lid open without having to pull it out from under the screen.
These pictures are better than in the promotional brochures. They should've sent you to south of France to make those.
Thanks. I guess the photography class I took in college paid off.
Koocanusa Bridge over Lake Koocanusa. Purported to be the most beautiful long span steel bridge. Award winning.
Sherman Pass rest stop and campground on Sherman Pass Scenic Byway, Washington State.
BTW: I think my wife took both of those pictures....but, she was another subject that I took in college, so it all worked out.
Excellent idea! Where do you get the cover and the wind deflector? Did you make it yourself? Thanks,
Cabrio Supply in the Netherlands. I ordered one for the silver car the same day I purchased the car. It arrived the next day from the Netherlands. A year later I order one for the Egyptian Sand car and it took about a week to get. If you get one, look at my thread, post #42, here on how to install it. It's about a half hour job the first time.
With the windscreen deployed, and both front windows up, it is less drafty and your heat or A/C are effective within your cocoon.
