yeah doing gate shifting woudl help a lot, it will shift faster. but you will have to learn it and get used to it, otherwise it's hard to shift down sometimes.
also i always wonder what happens if you "accidentally" force it into 1st when you are going too fast?

From pp. 199-201 of the 2002 manual (SC430 through 2001 production). For other model years, the page numbers might be different, but I expect the information to be pretty much the same.

All electronically controlled transmissions prevent a gear to engage above engine redline; even Corollas have that feature
. The same way electronic engine control prevents over-revving the engine ('hard' limiters cut ignition; 'soft' limiters cut fuel progressively).
On a manual transmission, you'd mechanically over-rev the engine causing all kinds of damage.

I leave my manual in the car so I'm never caught without it. When I want to refer to it when I'm not in the car, I read the manual's PDF files I downloaded from the Lexus web site. Very handy ... if your PC is usually running.

Great suggestion! Turning off the VSC totally gets rid of the stall that occurs when accelerating out of a corner. Couple that with a downshift to 2nd gear going into the turn and you get a tire screeching power surge that'll knock your socks off.
