if you want the little dash light to go out when you use the 2006 tailights on 02-05 and for the lights to work properly you must use the 2006 ecu, no other way. its not a big deal to change out the computer in the trunk.

I am all set in either ignoring the light or pulling out (or taping) the light bulb. I promise you I am so ready.

This is also something I'd like a bit more detail on. I see no point in spending the money for the ECU, when some black tape will do the job.

Page 4 of this thread gives you the verbal. Bob also has the illustrations below (Thx Bob)....
I searched every page on this incredible thread myself looking for the DIY on the tape. I believe the best verbal is on page 4 and follow Bob's pics below. The best guidance I found was that the steering wheel needs to be all the way down and all the way out.
I plan on doing this too. Although the amber light is so far up on the cluster it can only been seen when I'm not doing my gansta lean (lol) to the left and am sitting upright in the car and somewhat in a lower posture position to see the bulb. Most of the time I don't care or notice, but I'm OCD and a perfectionist so I want to see how easy it is to black it out. We must be careful not to damage the speedo cover or touch the needles or we could be in big trouble. I'd like to know from long term tape users if the tape adhered all this time or does it loose it's stickiness? I wish we could just pull the bulb behind there! There was some talk about that, but I don't think it was ever done or attempted. I definitely don't think the ECU is worth the money now (at one time for the entire kit it was much more affordable, but that group buy is done and gone) considering the install time as well and how little the light is, etc...IMO.

Hope this DIY is completed before it is my turn to do this upgrade (I can feel it is soon...).
Thanks in advance to the brave soul.

1st, get the LED lights installed. Then the DIY to install tape over the tail light warning bulb 9from what I can imagine tape is installed over the cluster opening, not on the bulb itself.

OK everyone, here it is. PICS and a movie showing the lights and NO LIGHT.
In other words, the new ECU WORKS perfectly. No light whatsoever! I am sure Luis at Carson will come up with new prices for the group buy. I have mine.
Instructions:
1) Put top up
2) Remove carpet over spare tire area
3) Remove Side pockets, left and right. 3 plastic clips each hold them down.
4) Now remove the two 10mm bolts holding the hold downs (polished loops) left and right.
5) Now remove the middle trim piece that cover everything in the middle to gain access to the ECU. It has many of the same plastic clips. The above will take an average 20 minutes at most.
You should now see this. The rest takes about 20 minutes tops.
See ECU on left. Unplug negative cable on battery before proceeding.
Remove the top to the unit. Release tab is in the back. Lifts right up.
Old unit installed in car ready to be removed. All plugs need to be unplugged.
You wont see this as I took apart the old unit to look at the circuit board just because I am curious.
Three 10mm nuts hold the ECU on the body. This one in on the back. Two are up front.
New unit in the box from Carson. All required fuses are alrady installed.
Remove this 10mm nut. A black cover will be on this which needs to be removed. Then just unplug all of the plugs. They cannot be switched around so do not worry.
Here is the new unit installed in car. Notice that the black bolt protector is not yet on on bottom right.
Make sure all plugs are seated. 3x10mm nuts are secure. 10mm nut holding wire is secure with black bolt cover on. Now connect battery and test. Once completed reinstall everything in reverse. Be prepared to purchase some of those plastic clips as they tend to break easy on removal.
It has been a long 2 month journey and many have been patient and helpful. Enjoy your 06 tail light upgrade. Carson is waiting.

Great coverage on how to change the ECU. If I ever do that mod I think I can handle it, after seeing the photos and the write up. Thanks Pearlpower and VIPNiSS.
