Default instrument cluster question - mileage

Can anyone tell me where the mileage is stored, IE if I switch the instrument cluster out will it show a different mileage. I ask this because someone told me that along with the cluster theres a small computer that has to deal with the mileage which I think is bogus since I have never heard of this before. Can anyone shine some light on this for me.

that's correct, the mileage ecu is together with the cluster. say if today your cluster went out and dealership needs to get a new one for you, they will need to register your mileage and have it pre-programmed in the new cluster before they put it in. so no, it's not bogus, it's correct.

i believe all lexus, at least the recent ones, are like that. my gs400, is300, and sc430 all similar

The dealership will go by their stored mileage for that vehicle as a guideline though not completely correct. A waiver will also have to be signed and will be on record so that the next owner that purchases the vehicle will find this when they visit Lexus for a maintenance history report.

The car's computer is well aware of the mileage. If someone tries to be sneaky, they'll end up in jail on the first service check when it hooks up to the computer.

Tony , I would recommend against buying one on Ebay with unknown mileage. They pop up once in a while from $200-$300 with known mileage.

THe mileage ECU is together with the cluster therefore its built onto the cluster and not a seperate unit? So if I had two entire clusters I could switch them out and it would show different mileages?

Built into the cluster. Cannot be swapped other than programmed. Why do you need another cluster?

Was thinking about getting another one and switching out all the LED's, just not sure if I am going to show a different mileage or not and if I will get in trouble.

But if mileage is built into the cluster then wont 2 clusters show different mileages when put into the car.

Hey pearl btw did u read what I asked about the tail lights?

Yes,installing another cluster will change the mileage to the replacement clusters mileage.

but since the mileage is stored on the ecu inside the cluster I could swap the two so that I wouldnt violate any laws and stuff right.

Legally you would have to report the mileage is not the actual mileage when selling the car. Or just take it to a dealer to have it programmed.

I still dont understand this comment, obviously if the second cluster has less mileage than the first one and I go into the dealer with that cluster in they know something is up. But what if he talking about "When it hooks up to the computer".

Call the dealer and ask them.
