A Dallas Morning News article in today’s paper had some interesting comments about the SC430 – thought you might be interested. The article covered both the new SC and the new 2002 Thunderbird – not a comparison – just an article about two “Head-turning coupes”. Some excerpts:

“In the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone, more than 700 people are on waiting lists for the SC430”.

“It’s the strongest demand I’ve ever seen for any automobile, and I’ve been in the business a few years,” said Carl Sewell, chairman of Dallas-based Sewell Automotive Co. (Sewell Lexus).

Andy Adams, owner of AutoFlex Leasing in Richardson, said some of his customers want SC430s so badly that they have authorized his company to pay over list price to get one. “People call us on popular vehicles, and we have gotten a lot of calls on this car,” said Mr. Adams, whose personal car is a white SC430. “And just wait until September. That’s when the convertible season starts in Texas because July and August are too hot.”

“Although the SC430 has been available since March, the entire first year’s production of at least 12,000 cars is sold out.” Many would-be buyers won’t see their cars for another year, officials said.

Moreover, used versions of the SC430, which are available now, are selling for $10,000 to $15,000 more than the list price of the new cars, said Barry Pryor, general manager of Sewell Lexus. The cars are apparently coming from some SC buyers who opted to take advantage of the hot market and put their cars up for sale after driving only a few hundred miles, Mr. Pryor said. Sewell is selling its new SC430s for sticker price, but the used vehicles are priced at market value, and that is currently “mid to high $70s,” Mr. Pryor said. “I’m sure that there will come a day when there’s not a waiting list for this car, but I can’t see it,” he said.

Even Lexus officials are a little surprised by the success of the SC430 and are trying to find additional production capacity so the company can build a few thousand more. Lexus hopes to stretch first-year production to 14,000 or more vehicles.

Thought you lucky 430 owners might be interested in what’s being said about the car in Big D!
