Default Trunk Problem

Just before I stored the car for winter I noticed that when the trunk was fully opened it would just sink back down and not stay open.

I have had the car since it came out in 2001 and have not heard of this from issue from anyone

Any ideas?

One or more of your lift supports is bad. Those are the black hydraulic items on each side of the trunk which holds it up. Replacement is simple and run around $125.00 each at the dealer.

Apparently this happens with age for struts like this, especially ones that support a fair amount of weight.

On my last visit to the dealer before my warranty expired at the 4 year mark I reported that the trunk lid was not being supported as well as when the car was new, and the struts were replaced at no charge under warranty.

I guess in 4 more years I'm on my own.

Normally one new lift support will keep the trunk up along with one weak one. However it is recommended to replace both at the same time as the other one will eventually give out as well. Just an option for those not wanting to drop $300.00 for two.
