Default help me understand this spare tire kit thing

based on this pdf http://plaza.ufl.edu/bigtigga/SC430-...20Assembly.pdf

I have everything but the tire and covers and the wheel mounting bracket, or does every SC430 come with the jack and tool kit?? I think my car came with run flats and the previous owner converted over to PZeros. Can I just buy a mounting bracket for the tire and the plate and screw to tighten it in? What happen if you just set the spare in the cradle, does it flop around, or can you bungee it in??? I understand I can buy from a Acura dealership for a lot less money a 2004 Acura TL MT (6mt) T145/70R17 106m

I bought a grey cloth spare tire cover from my local auto parts store for $14 and then just sat the spare in the craddle. I then strapped it with 2 bungee cords. I have no bouncing issues.

What did the spare tire/wheel cost you? Did you go with the Acura TL spare? Do local auto parts sell SC430 spare tire covers??

As far as I know, all SCs come with a jack in the trunk (unless they changed that recently.) You can get the wheel and tire only from Lexus for just over $200.00, which I did when I dumped the run flats earlier this summer.

They have a "spare tire kit" which includes that plus a revised floor mat and a cover for the tire and some other stuff, but you don't need that, and the "Kit" costs about 7 or $800. For occasional use, you don't really need all that extra stuff, which is just window dressing. (Although I still don't know what's wrong with dressing a window.)

I got the wheel/tire and it fits snugly into the space designed for the tire, but you have to take out the floor mat. I cut a piece of masonite and used some spray adhesive to glue a grey carped remnant to it for that custom look. That cost me $5.00 more.

The cheap tire cover sounds like a nice touch. The tire fits in there very tightly, and so far I have not even added a cord to fasten it in, but I might try that. It just seems to me that even over a big bump, the tire has nowhere to go. The worst that could happen is that it would jump up and inch or so and hit the bottom of the trunk lid, but I don't think that would cause any harm.

When I hit the road, I can add the spare tire in about 90 seconds.

Works for me. Let's hope I never have to use it.

hey that PDF file is the one that I am hosting LOL. anyways yea I got the entire kit minus the spare tire. I went and got a supra TT spare tire. They sell the entire kit for under 600 on ebay. Also you can just buy everything minus the tire and try and find a supra tt spare tire and you will save an additional $100. You only need the mounting and tire, but everything else makes it look better. Heres a price list I got from the guy that has the kit on ebay

I posted this on another thread, but it makes more sense here:
A stock wheel/tire obviously doesn't fit on the hole for the spare, so does it fit in the trunk? How about a 19" wheel/tire? And a 20"? Just curious if you guys thought about that. I also wonder if all that weight would do some damage to the cardboard cover over the jack. And you better have a blanket or some sheets for not messing up your beautiful carpet (especially the ecru one) in such a scenario.

After thinking about this, I'd probably just carry a flat kit (reamer, plugs, etc) with an electric inflator, just like on a motorcycle. Otherwise I'd NEVER travel on this car, since I'd have to leave the trunk empty in case of a flat (rear seats are not enough). Later.

Default Never used it

I had two SC430s, an `02 and an `04; the `02 came with run flats AND the spare tire kit. I soon switched-out the run flats for Michelin Pilots and when I traded for the `04 I had the dealer switch the Pilots and the spare kit from the `02 to the `04. I've since sold the `04, but never had to use the spare kit.

A temporary spare fits in the cutout under the hatch, and allows the tire to stand upright so that the top can be lowered.

A full size wheel and tire will fit in the trunk, but not in that upright position, so you cannot lower the top while it is in there.

If you want to cover the remaining area where the jack and the tools are, you either have to buy the floor mat with a tire cutout from Lexus for $200 or make your own for about $10.00.

The carpet in the trunk of all the SCs is grey, even if the interior of the cabin is "ecru."

I always keep a pair of cotten gloves in the car, because my hands are more important than my carpet, but when I travel with the spare, I just throw a heavy weight plastic bag designed for yard waste. This way I can transport the flat tire in the trunk or in the back seat without messing up the car, my hands or my hair.
