SC430 as a principal car?
Hello all. I have just a while to go until my son goes off to college, and I have been dreaming of getting an SC430 to replace my RX330 once I don't have to haul him and his friends around. But, I am beginning to question the practicality of an SC as my principal vehicle. It seems that there will be many times when I'll wish I could carry more than 2 people and a minimum of cargo. I'm curious how you handle this issue if the SC is your only car. Any thoughts would be helpful. My option would be an LS I suppose, but I just LOVE the SC.
Thanks, Mike

Purchase the SC for those moments you want to go on a ,"spirit drive" and an older LS for the other times.
The SC430 is not the most practical car around-same as a Porsche,Vette, or other sports cars. A great deal of luggage can be placed in the rear as long as the top is left up.

Yup like he said....but yeah the SC is currently my only car and I love it. I knew what I was "getting into" when I bought it. And yeah I'm considering a second car. Partly for lack of space but primarily because I just like to switch hit. Again I love the SC as a daily as it works for me and my girlfriend. Your son is on his way out....I got 3 words for you. GET THAT COUPE!!!

I love my SC but don't think I could live with it as my only car. When I owned my '03 SC430 and was commuting every day, I also had an '03 QX4 (SUV) that I used as an alternate vehicle. I still put over 15k miles on my SC in one year because I loved to drive it.
Now that I have my '06 SC430, I still have an M35 for hauling extra people and going to the airport (although the SC will hold plenty of luggage in the trunk with the top up).
If you are on the fence, you may want to wait for the IS convertible. Not sure exactly when it will be introduced, but speculation is early 2008. Not much of a back seat, even in the sedan, but at least it might work for short hauls. I eventually want to trade in both cars for a 4-seat convertible but haven't found one I really like yet.

Great that this question came up. The SC has been my weekend car for the past 11 months. I only have a petite wife and no relative in the San Francisco Bay Area to haul around and so far the SC is 'plenty of car' for the weekend pleasure trips and for the occasional customer calls during work.
Never thought that life might change any time so soon but now there is an opportunity for a new job in LA where I'll live alone with the SC as the only car during the week, with a lot of daily drivings at work and plus frequent weekend commutes to and back from San Francisco. It's like taking the SC out of retirement and doing lots of heavy duty works . I kind of wonder if I may have to sell her . Don't really know if the job and/or the car will work out ?

You basically have to decide if you want a 2 seater. I did and it is my only car. If you do the SC is the better than any other 2 seater that I know of. It not only has an adequate trunk but a rear seat that can hold quite a bit and can be used for a passenger in an emergency. I have a sensitive back and find the seats perfect. Most sports cars have too low of seats. It is very quiet and has a great ride without runflats of course. For this reason it is the only 2 seater that I would consider for an only car. About the biggest complaint I have with the car is the steering which requires a lot of input going around corners. It makes the car seem less sporty, in fact no more so than most sedans. But in my case the plusses exceed the negatives.

the sc is my only car. but i'm single with no kids. if i need to go anywhere with more than one person, i let someone else drive. on the few occasions i have had to fit a couple unexpected passengers into the back seat, the fun outweighed the discomfort. then again, i'm still young. cramming a couple 20 somethings into the back might be a little different than if your friends are a little older.

SC is a great car if you have another one that is more practical.
My wife and I have and SC, Supra TT, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's amazing how often we end up saying how we LOVE THAT JEEP....
SC is an amazing car (has horrible offsets on the stock rims though...) so if you have the means to have another "practical" car around I say do it.

a lot of you seem to recommend having a larger car around just in case. I am in the same boat as MikeinLA. I'm debating between the GS and SC430.
Practically speaking, a 4 door seems to be more reasonable, but I just love the hardtop convertible SC!!
