Default Just a reminder on TEIN CST coilovers....

In case any of you don't regularly peruse the vendor section, just a small reminder that the TEIN CST coilovers for the SC430 will have a pretty substantial price increase at the end of this month (August 2007), so if anyone is seriously considering them, check out the vendor section.

I guess this is a good time to reiterate the differences between some of the different models.

The Gen 1 CS are an aluminum body (anodized gold), which is great for unsprung weight and overall performance. The only issues with those were some galling with the spring seat adjustment in the climates with corrosion tendencies (snow/salt). These were not able to be rebuilt in the US, they had to be sent back to TEIN Japan for rebuild/revalving. Also there was less room at the top of the strut in the rear trunk, which made edfc motor mounting a little more difficult. It did still fit however, but barely.

The Gen 2 are steel bodied (flat black body), which are heavier. These however, can be rebuilt at TEIN USA, so turnaround is much faster, if this ever becomes necessary. I have not had to send any back yet, either new or old. The new version also have a different rear upper mount design with a recessed pocket area specifically for EDFC motor clearance.

This creates a unique issue however! The old version adjustment **** was only 2" or so below the trunk panel, if you are skilled enough to drill a properly located tiny hole for access to this, you can reach it for manual adjustment with a standard allen wrench. This hole is virtually imperceptible if done properly.

The new version has the adjustment **** around 5" down, so it's much harder to reach with a standard wrench, through an access hole.

Just food for thought, but the Gen 1 are never readily available, so most of these comparisons are for naught.

Springs and shocks are available for this chassis, but the 05+ have a different rear spring, which there (as far as I know) are still no shocks available. You will either need to switch over to 02-04 setups, both spring AND shock together (which there is absolutely nothing "worse" about them). Or have something mixed, matched and fabbed up. A combination of SC/GS/IS parts is necessary to accomplish a fabbed setup. At that point the TEINs usually end up being a better choice.

DO NOT try to just swap in Gen 2 GS stuff in the rear, as THIS WILL NOT WORK!!!!!!!!! The mounts and mounting points are similar, but the shock bodies are completely different. If someone tells you otherwise, thank them, and don't let them touch your car. Ever.

Maybe it is because a few used sets are for sale on classifieds right now.
