Default area around radio **** gets dirty or wearing off

The radio cover on our SC look alumium but Im not sure if they are or just painted. The area around the Radio volume **** on the cover was getting dirty from adjusting the volume all the time and I tried cleaning. It doesn't come off!!!, it almost looks like the covers paint is wearing off or something.

Anyone know a way to clean that area. Or is it really wearing off?

I used a q-tip and some mild cleaner. Came right off.

Mine doesn't come off either.

I even tried to use gasline to clean that area, but it became even darker. How stupid I was!

I used rubbing alcohol. 70 or 90%. Qtip to get into the recessed lettering and good as new.

Trust me, Lee.
I had used water, alcohol and other cleaners before I got stupid to use gasoline.

I also found some other used sc430's have the same issue.

Other than not using your entire hand to change the volume there is not much to do. Keep the fingers on the **** only. Of course that does you guys no good now. Now the lettering in the above text can be cleaned with a q-tip and alcohol.

Best solution:

Wipe your finger in a kleenex in between picking your nose and changing the volume.

There is no cleaner to recommend because there is nothing to clean. The marks are from wear into the faceplate itself from fingernails and fingers over a period of time. The only solution would be to replace the faceplate from a clean used unit.

Revitalizing an old thread...I had a rubbed mark on the faceplate near the volume ****. I thought it was dirt/oil so I tried to clean it. After trying several different cleaners, I decided to try Goof Off. Well, it cleaned it all right and took more of the silver paint off. My little spot is much bigger now.

I never really liked the difference in texture and color of the rubbed silver audio faceplate vs the smooth silver temperature faceplate just above it. I'm wondering if anyone has purposely taken all the silver off and now has just black? There are only a couple labels painted on and they're obvious and not really necessary.

Also, I've read how to clean behind the temperature control window, but how can I clean behind this audio window? You can see in the picture the "scratches" which are on the back side of this window. Is the faceplate itself easily removeable in order to both remove the silver and clean this window?

I normally use de-greasers. Goo-gone or goof off would have been harsh. Sorry you found out the hard way. I also want to know how to completely clean the lens. The anti-glare has worn off and now look like scratches.

Somebody here has torn them apart and have cleaned them out. Goes true for the AC Lens as well. If we can only get these cleaned up, they are eye sores.

Well since I have my old OEM head unit sitting on my desk right now...maybe I should see how/if the face plate detaches from the chassis bodies of the receiver and the Multi CD Player... hmmm another DIY?
