2002 sc 430 navigation reads "no disk detected"

Hey just wanted to say I've been following this thread for some time now and i thought I'd post my experience.
Took apart my drive unit some time ago and when I applied external power to the unit, the motor worked and moved the laser unit apparently as designed so that doesn't appear to be my problem. It looks like other posters have had a similar experience. That being the case, my unit remains in pieces until a definitive solution is posted here OR I find a reasonably priced unit in a salvage yard

I am not sure but have you tried a hobby or RC modeling supply place? They usually have gear kits of all sizes for RC motors and servos. Not sure if you would find an exact replacement but might be worth a tray. Another option might be picking up a broken CD Rom or player and see if you can salvage one from that. Just some thoughts.

Ok I started to have the same problem and I don't if I should replace the motor or just pick up a cheap used updated navigation dvd, or just go with a whole double din after market system? Any help would be appreciated!

2004 SC430 Gen 2/3 Navigation
I was having the same problem with my original Gen 2/3 navigation system.
This post has a bunch of info and is very helpful. Tried a few things but the "No Disk Detected" continued.
Ended up taking the easy way out. Bought a used Gen 4 DVD unit. It is directly plug compatible with the Gen 2/3 harnesses. The only downside is you must also get a Gen 4 map DVD but being as my Gen 2/3 map was way out of date, a necessary expense.
The new system works great, is faster, and I have the V11.1 maps. All for about $400.

2004 SC430 Gen 2/3 Navigation
If you decide to upgrade to Gen 4, look for the part number 86841-50090. That is the part number I used to replace the Gen 2/3 ( part number 86841-33060 ) unit in my 2004 SC430.
I found the Gen 4 units were cheaper than the Gen 2/3 units, probably due to greater demand because of the higher failure rate. ( And why pay more for something that is not as reliable? )
You already know how much fun crawling into the "trunk" is and my eye-sight was not up to the challenge of replacing those tiny internal components inside the drive.

Check and verify the current drive part number. If it matches, you should be good to to. It was a plug and play swap. Even the mounting screw holes matched up. The used Gen 4 unit I bought was from a 2005 Prius, but it's used in other Toyota vehicles as well, so go by the part number.

The Gen 4 display is different. It does split screen, different colors, etc. Can't remember the Gen 2/3 display very well as it was always resetting plus we only had the car a month before the swap.
For the price and added features, replacing the stereo system is a viable option.

So for those people that upgraded a Gen 2/3 to a Gen 4, are you able to use Bluetooth for the phone now? Does the new unit function just like it would in a factory equipped Gen 4 car?
Thanks
