When you say does not respond do you mean it will not spin up the disk either? Did you take it apart to check internals for any sign of a problem? You can take the shell off and watch it while it is still plugged up.

New Information about the Denso ECU Gen2 PN# 86841-47020
After doing some research and speaking to Denso Nav division in Long Beach California. It seems that on March 8th, 2010 Denso announced to their dealers that they could repair the ECU's. You will need to contact your Lexus Dealer and let them know to call Denso in Long Beach if they are not aware of this program.
You will need to take your ECU to the dealer and have them ship it to Denso. Turn around time is rumored to be about 1-2 weeks.

Just another way to try and keep these things working.

BTW, I did source the replacement DVD Laser Head from Gerner Electronics in Germany, and that did not solve my problem.

Justin, have you or anyone else actually tried to send these off to DENSO yet to see how their prices compare to say like the people at Audio & Video Service Stop (www.videoservicestop.com). My wife's 2003 RX300 with NAV just started saying "no disk detected" like 3-4 days ago.

My wife complains that the nav disc doesn't have alot of the streets she has to travel on for work. So I have often thought of getting the updated discs....knowing that, do ya'll think it worth trying to find a replacement used/refurbished ECU that maybe has a later version of Navigation on it? What do these look like cost wise? Thanks everyone.

Justin, can you please re-confirm. I just called Denso California, Long Beach. I spoke to tech support instead of Nav division, but before the guy told me that he couldn't talk to me because I wasn't a dealer, he said that no they weren't doing repairs, but still just trade outs. Kind of seems like a racket to me if they end up charging you $1800 for a fix that only costs them $10 for a motor plus labor.

Or if any other LEXUS dealer is online and could call Denso Long Beach Nav Division and check for me, I was trying to find out how much Denso would charge to repair that motor. I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks

So my saga continues.

Turns out that Denso in Long Beach (the nav division) is doing repair and returns of Nav ECU's. However what my Lexus dealer (Pleasanton, Ca.) said is that Denso will charge about $500 to repair the unit. As for the Gen 2 86841-47020 they doubt that they have the parts to repair it, so the only option is to get a refurb. the real kick in the pants is that the dealer said the refurb cost went up to $1100. last week it was $750.

I think Lexus needs to learn about customer loyalty and reasonable present value for services like this one. At the very least, they should make the schematics available for all us hobbyists that are not afraid to tinker.

I did end up getting my ECU fixed myself after replacing the Laser drive motor PN# ppn13ka12c - I found one for $15 including shipping. It was used from a Hitachi CDrom drive and was the last one the guy had

Talwang, thank you for the help. Unfortunately, the motor they are advertising for on ebay is not technically the PPN13KA12C motor..... you have to look at the description, the motor model is a PPN13kA11C.

Has anyone ever tried the PPN13KA11C motors to see if they would work????

From the picture of the PPN13KA12C motor it also looks like the 12C motor has a gear attached to the shaft, but the 11C does not......???

Since I do not have a schematic I cannot tell you for sure that it won't work, however It's unlikely - The PPN13KA12C runs at 2volts it's a very sensitive motor with a much lower RPM, but more importantly it will begin to turn at a lower voltage / torque than the 11c.

I know that a PPN13EB10C did not work.

The gear on the shaft does not matter, you just pull the one off your existing dead motor and push it on the shaft of the replacement good motor.

Hello all.
After an entire year of fruitless searching I finally gave up on finding the elusive PPN13KA12C motor.

I started searching salvage yards across the country and found a wide variety of prices for replacement ECU units. I settled on a supplier in Owensville, MO (near St. Louis) who said that he had several replacement units. Since it's close to me, I drove down and was able to purchase a used GEN 4 unit for $545 from them. This worked out great for me because I was able to actually plug it in and test it before paying for it. I cannot say enough about how helpful these guys were since they fielded numerous phone calls and emails from me and even had a technician meet me after hours so that I could test it out. They also had Gen 3 units available for $395. I did not inquire about Gen 2 units since I didn't want to replace my faulty unit with another one.

The company is called XVipers, Inc. and their web site is http://xvipersinc.com. The phone number is 866-984-7377 or 573-437-2292. Given the pricing I've seen elsewhere, I thought this was a pretty good deal. Mostly, I'm just glad to have my GPS back in service - especially upgraded two generations from my older unit.

And for those who had questions about compatibility, it's simply a matter of removing the 3 wire connections from the old unit and plugging in the new one. The mounting brackets on the new unit were different so I still have to remove them and put my old brackets on, but it's been working great.

Thanks to all on the forum who offered their information and knowledge - especially the guy who listed the different generations and part numbers.

Now that I have repaired my ECU, I no longer leave the DVD installed in the drive. I observed just how much seeking and activity the DVD drive has every time you start the car it's no wonder it wears itself out.

Since I don't need the GPS all the time, I only insert the DVD when it's needed, I am hoping that in some small way I may extend the life of my ECU.

I've found three different part numbers for the ECU unit, can someone tell me which is Gen 2, 3, & 4.
The part numbers are 86841-33060, 86841-47020, & 86841-24010.
