Gen 4 DVD Player Upgrade
Well, my ECU decided to take a turn for the worse after fixing it. I started getting a message: "Program Disk is Installed". I've tried everything, no dice!
I found a Gen 4 ECU in a salvaged Prius for $400 and went for it. So long to the Gen 2! Gen 4 is the latest you can upgrade to with just plug and play.

Fix for No disk detected Navigation DVD
We have customers coming into our shop with disc not detected errors. Very rarely is it the motor PPN13 that is really at fault. Sometimes the motor has some carbon accumulation so it stops moving. If you attach a 9 volt battery to the terminals of the dvd lens motor and reverse the polarity a couple of times, like 5 to 10 times it should get rid of all the carbon buildup and you will be fine. We have done this a couple of time with our customer cars and they have been good to go.

To the individuals that updated a Gen 2/3 to Gen 4. After the upgraded ECU is installed, does the system take Gen 4 discs or does it still require Gen 2/3 discs because the rest of the Nav system is OEM. Fyi, I have a 2002 SC430 manufactured Mar 2002 and I am the original owner. The ECU was replace after almost 5 years, less than 20,000 miles, and Lexus agreed to do it at no charge as a good faith gesture, was reading "no disk detected."

Hmmm, I can't get page '9' to show up. I click on '9' or the arrow and it still shows page 8...
Anyway, I have an 06 LS430 that is giving the same problem with the 'can't read disc' error and it won't eject. I have the drive out of the black box so some of the funcitons can still work on the dash. Note: with the gen 4, some of the dash functions do not work without the dvd in there, functions besides just the map display and navigation.
I don't know if the motor is different from the earlier units. The Toyota/Lexus part number on the drive is DVS-3010, and it seems the DVS-3150 is a later replacement. I found the drive available from the Netherlands but it's over $300 to get it here, total.
I'll try to replace this motor and see what happens. However, I can't see any motor with the circuit board still in place, so that will be next to remove.
IMO the best option is to replace the DVD mechanism with a solid state disk drive. Does anyone know the pinout of the connector cable, or better still have a source for an adapter cable to connect the flat cable to IDE or SATA? Most ssd's are SATA now.
If I can get to the motor and it's a different part number, I'll post that later.
Thanks,
David

I don't know if this helps you or not. But for $15 you can buy two days of access to Toyota's TIS or Technical Information Service which includes ALL factory service manuals as searchable and downloadable PDFs. Included in the materials are ALL wiring schematics. Here is a link to the site to check it out. https://techinfo.toyota.com/techInfoPortal/ Good luck.

I got the wiring diagrams and pinouts. Now looking for a solution (might have to invent one!) to use a solid state disc instead of the <censored> dvd drive. That 50-pin flat flex cable connector is really a pain in the patoot!

I got to the motor almost and it is such a difficult job to get it out, I gave up. Just freakin' gave up. Hoping now for the solid state disk solution.
Btw, a DVS-3011 does not work as a direct replacement for the dvd drive, assuming the dvd drive is the only thing not working. <sigh> I bought a -3011 off ebay and tried it without success.

ECU generations and part numbers
Most 02 sc430 are also equipped with 86841-47020 which is a gen2 as well.
If your car is out of warranty, try to find an used gen3 replacement (86841-33060) that seems to have less problem or you can even go with gen4 (86841-50090).
Just don't buy an 86841-47020 or 86841-50010 again.
An used gen3/4 unit can be easiely found on ebay for less than $1,000.
