Navigation System Becoming Stupid?
I'll start by saying that I haven't been all that impressed with the nav system on my '02 SC--it seems fairly non-intuitive and often doesn't find the optimal route. However, it's become especially stupid in the past few weeks. When asked to route the "quickest" route from A to B, it now wants to take me by relatively circuitous route, veering off the interstate to take local roads when the interstate's clearly the quickest.
I believe I've checked all the settings that might affect this. Any ideas?

Checking the settings is good, but what you input for the settings is more important. One of the settings lets you modify MPH for the various road types (interstate, local roads, etc.). If you want to emphasize Interstates over local roads, raise the average speed for the Interstate and lower it for the local roads or some combination thereof.
Having said that, I tend to agree that the Lexus nav is not the smartest but its not horrible either, imho.

Thanks. I thought that might help, but hadn't tried it yet. I reset everything to default. I'm used to using the more advanced Garmins, which, while not perfect, seem to be much smarter at plotting routes. Maybe I'm just becoming more critical in my old age, but it does seem like the SC's nav system has started getting more cantankerous of late.

are you kidding me!?! i have a range and a mercedes and the navigations in both are terrible, terrible, no where even close to the lexus. for one thing, lexus is one of the few touch screen systems i've encountered in factory cars. i like it a lot. sounds like your settings are off, probably set to avoid highways.

Is there an "avoidance" setting? I know that you can do so on my Garmins, by designating a category to avoid (like toll roads or HOV lanes), or even avoiding a specific road or highway. The only setting that comes close to this that I can find is the screen that allows you to select speeds for freeways, streets, etc.
