You can only used the universak unit with a 2002. As it is only an input unit with typical RCA inputs than everyone on your Ipod is functional as nothing on the car controls the Ipod. In other words the car is used as an external speaker only for the Ipod or other source. Nothing is controlled by the car.
I also have their unit in our GX and other than the functional steering wheel control (of which the SC is hopelessly positioned) the universal unit is the same. The test that comes up in the GX is limited anyhow and I find it simpler to just look at the Ipod to make my selections. That is just me. Others may prefer the Nav display output.
