Not a stupid question. I wouldn't try it. For one thing, the side walls on run-flats are much more rigid than those on non run-flats; so, you would definitely notice a difference in ride and handling. If you want to switch from run-flats to non run-flats, I think you should do it all at once.

My 2-cents.

You tend to get some good deals when you buy a set ie buy 4 get one free, so you might not be saving yourself any money.

you can do it; it wont' hurt anything. you will feel the difference though, due to the construction of the tire. however, it' s not as if the non rf tires will be like balloons, they are still low profile performance tires.

I've heard that mixing on the same axle would be a big mistake.

definitely shouldn't mix them on teh same axle. they would respond far too differently to drive safely.

I work retail in a tire store and when you see a "buy 3 get one free" deal, its not as good as it seems, trust me. As for mixing runflats and non runflats, it would be ok and you probably will not notice the difference as long as the tires are of the same speed ratings. The speed rating has more to do with the handling of the tire than does the fact that it is a runflat or not. Run flats are stiffer in the sidewalls, but a low profile performance tire is plenty stiff as is. True high performance tires are capable of more than the any production car is anyway. I would not replace less than two tires at a time anyway, runflats or not.
