Nav System Message - Need some help interpreting
Hi folks,
A real lurker here, hoping you can share your wisdom. BTW, I love reading this forum. Yes, I hate the platter wheels, and would love to find an alternative on a suitable car. Yes, I hope my mother-in-law won't mind riding in the backseat, top down, driver seat all the way back. :-)
I'm in the hunt for a 04 SC, and have been watching online for a month or two now. Lots of the cars I look at have a Nav system picture where the display reads "No DVD".
From reading this forum, I realize that the Nav system, while not problematic, is a very expensive piece should it need repairing out of warranty, so I want to better understand this message.
For instance on this car (http://tinyurl.com/27z4ft) there is one picture which shows "no dvd" and one picture which shows what looks like a System settings type of screen.
So what is the scenario when the "No DVD" screen is shown? Is it a regular occurence?
Thanks, in advance.
Jerry

Jerry,
First off...welcome!
The "No DVD" screen means one of two things. Either there's no DVD in the drive (located in the trunk of the car) or that the NAV unit DVD-ROM drive is dying/has died. And yes, from what I understand, this is an expensive part to replace.
If you're looking at a 2004, it might still be under the 4-year factory warranty, depending on the In-Service date of that particular vehicle (and the vehicle mileage).
The other screen that they showed there is just of the sub-menus.

the dvds are expensive ($300+ new). so a lot of times people will either sell them on ebay when they trade their car in. or sometimes people test drive them to steal them. i'd almost guarantee this is the case. if you're buying from a dealer, i'd make them buy one or pull one from another car.

On this car my guess is that there just isn't a DVD in the drive. Not a big deal, if that's really the case. Before I bought, I'd make sure to see it with the DVD in, as it is a expensive repair (but not common).
Welcome to the forum and good luck!!!

Interesting
So, the sub-menus, as one person referred to them as, are not associated with the Nav? This would mean that seeing a car ad with that screen should not be taken as indication that the NAV works fine. Good to know.
Yes, I notice quite a few, say 20-% of the cars I look at, show this "No DVD" screen. I really would be shocked if they were ok units, with just a disk missing. If that was all, wouldn't a seller pick up a disk? i must be unique. :-)
Thanks.
