Default Does the 02' model year SC430 have any 1st year car bugs?

Do the 02' have any 1st year car bugs that need to stay away from? If there are bugs, what are they and what to look for? I remembered reading about some 02' have top operation issues, is that vaild and common?

Any other model year have specific issues?

I really want a 06'+, but they are still a little out of the price range. So I am wondering if the older cars are ok to drive.

Thanks in advance

I drive a 2003. So far the problems...

1) Windshield cracked for no apparent reason while the car was parked.
2) Driver-side speaker and sub woofer blown
3) A spring in the driver's seat feels loose (back-rest)
4) Noise (clung) from rear brakes, even at very low speed when you reach full stop
5) Leather from the roller-hoops in the back started to come unglued.
6) Dome lights right button doesn't work.

Hope it helps you!

I'm not aware of any bugs tied to that model year (which I also have). There were some reports of radio failures (fixed under warranty), speakers cone mountings degrading over time (if you don't listen at high volumes you might not even be aware), and so on. Somebody posted the Consumer Reports reliability chart for the model, and each year had maybe one area - usually different - that had something less than perfect (but far from poor).

One thing to be aware of is the 90K / 6 year major service. They replace the timing belt, water pump, and so on. SC's don't seem to accumulate 15K miles per year, but it's now 6 years for the 02. That particular job was $1550 for me last week (parts and labor, tax extra). Of course, you might want to gamble that those things will last for quite a bit longer. <grin>

i've had an '02 for a year with no real complaints. but mine only had 36,000 miles on it when i bought it. 43,000 now. so it's in good condition. i'd recommend buying an older, low milage one.

I most likely have more miles than most. No issues with leather, speakers, etc...Actually, nothing, and I drive it like I stole it.
Early radios has error warning issues, some speakers here and there though not sure if that is related to volume. A few complained about windshields but it appears to be rare.

Pearl, only one more post until 5000! Congrats

And the cracked windshield is the only one I can think of for the earlier models.

I have an 02, I have had only one thing happen. One of the pistons that hold up the trunk lid went out under warranty. The only complaint I had was the sorry runflat tires. Too loud and rough. I replaced them with a rechargeable inflation machine to put in the truck and some good tires. Except for that I have had perfect service and a GREAT ride. I have about 45,000 on it so far.

A very common issue to do with the age of the struts, not the year of the car. Easily fixed by a $65 EBay purchase and 15 minutes low-skilled effort (search the archives for detailed instructions).

Cecil.... how is it holding up with that type of mileage...I want a SC430 but I don't want a car note. I think ones with that type of mileage are tangible enough for me to pay cash.

GREAT THREAD..

Default 2002 sc430 new guy2be!

I have found a Black with Black interior with 63000 miles. He wanted 24000 and I have him looking at a 22000 offer. It has some ding issues in the doors, and a few scuffs on the front air dam. Nothing gauged, but not as clean as the dealer has for the same price and its a 2003 with 84000 miles.
The 2002 has the chrome upgrade on the rims which is a plus, but its still a year older. The nice thing about the 2003 its a lease back one owner and it has the nice saddle interior.
Any input from the guys and gals would be very helpful.
