Dents in Roof

I backed the car out of the garage today and noticed about 20 dents/dings in the roof. I live in San Diego where the temperature changes and the weather are mild. I knew I never had the car out in the rain. We had one hail storm earlier this month and my car was in the garage. I was infuriated a the thought that someone had vandalized my car.
I drove three miles, parked the car, got out and immediately looked at the roof. ALL DENTS WERE GONE. This has to be due to the aluminum roof combined with the midday sun hitting the cold metal when I backed out of the garage. Has anyone else noticed this? I was elated that my dents/dings were all gone but still confused.

I had an '95 Audi 5000S that got hail damage early one Spring around '97. I made a claim with my insurance company, go paid, and intended to get it fixed early in the Summer. I was traveling a lot, and never got around to it, but in late August I noticed that I no longer had the dents. Evidently the metal memory from the original stamping process relieved the stress from the hail damage in those 100+ degree days in TX.
Another way to do this is to heat the area and drop dry ice onto it. Sometimes that will pop out the dent.

Makes sense that the heat would make the metal bounce back into shape much like the hair dryer and dry ice methods.

Interesting!
And you say your car WASN'T in the hailstorm.
I'm with Pearlpower - never heard of this before and post pics if you can.

The car was never in the hail storm. The metal apparently was adjusting to the temperature change from the garage to the direct sunlight.
The metal was definitely indented. I ran my finger over the dents and felt them as well. Within 5 minutes of driving in the sunlight with the aluminum roof heating up, they all disappeared. If there is a next time, I will take pictures and post them
