This is an excellent hypothesis. The owner is probably selling the updated disc on eBay as we speak.

OTOH, czerkawski said that it it worked when he first got the car, albeit with touch screen problems. Would the nav even load with an old disc?

Bottom line, the disc is certainly the cheapest place to start. If it turns out to be the optical read on the drive, at least you still have a new disc.

Czerk.... From the sound of things Jason could be correct with the possibility the previous owner removed the updated disk and put the old one back in. Either Toyota or Lexus can reprogram your system to take that disk, but if you didn't get a warranty with your car you're gonna be stuck with a fee. You might want to get the up-to-date disk for your 02 anyway.

I hate to mention, but some SCs 02-04 I have heard of problems with the optical reader as mentioned above. I have a 02 and haven't had any problems with mine. 100K miles.

If you do know someone with a SC with your generation and same disk, you might want to give that a try before you get too $$$ involved. If not, I think I would try having Toy or Lex look at it.

Congrats on the purchase and don't get too discouraged as the problems are far and in between with the Lexus SC.

Wish I could help more.............that's about all I know and would do.

Good Luck,

lar
