Default Nav Upgrade Question

I know this has been covered somewhat in prior threads, but...

I have a 2004 with the original nav disk. Half the addresses I entered into it are not found (well, not half but a lot). Obviously, an upgrade to the 2008 version about to come out will help remedy that.

But, will the interface change? My wife has a 2007 ES350 and the screen has many more options, albeit at the cost of greater complexity.

So, will the upgrade change the look and "feel" of the screens?

When you install a new Navigation System disk, it does update the software (and the maps, address database, etc as you'd expect). This is why you can't "go back" and put an older Nav disk in the system; it won't work.

However, you've got a 2004 which, like my 2003, has the Gen 2/3 Nav system. This is not as new as the Gen 4 system which was upgraded in 2005 or 2006 (not 100% sure and don't have that much time to research it). There's a very noticeable difference between the Gen 2/3 and the Gen 4 systems and no software upgrade will make up the difference in the hardware.

So, the answer is "Yes" and "No". A new Nav. disk will upgrade your software and you may notice some new menu items/features however, it will not bring it up to the level of your wife's car. Again, don't have time to do the full research but, I'm sure the 2007 ES uses at least Gen 4, if not the Gen 5 Navigation system.

When I upgraded my 2003 to the 2006 Nav disk, it made a huge difference in the batting average of finding addresses but, there were only a few software update changes. However, I recently saw a 2002 that was running Nav. version 1.0.0 and wow, mine looked considerably different!

Thanks very much for your response. When the new disk comes out, I think I'll give it a try. The updated maps would be very helpful. I hate paying that much for what will essentially be a map upgrade but, I don't think I would risk my nav to anything other than the OEM disk.

Technically you can go back to an older version nav DVD, However you can not go back to generation 2 once you have upgraded to generation 3. This is when your disc is upgraded from a 2002. But if you have a 2003 up DVD you should be able to go back no problem. Your UI should not change, but it does make a big improvement on your addresses. I've gone through a few upgrade dvd's. Currently using the latest one. I went from a 2002 to 2006 and now have the 2007.

So, I have a 2002 with what I assume is a Gen 2 NAV system. Is it safe/OK for me to put in the newer disc (e.g. 2007 or 2008, whichever is the newest)? How can I tell what "Gen" my NAV is? Can anyone attest to there being a big difference - is it worth the $300? I've already found a few addresses that do not show up. Thanks!

I have version 5 in my LS430 and 7 in my SC430. Five is good enough and much better than the very early versions. Seven is slicker, but not worth paying three hundred bucks for.

Why don't you buy a used version 5 OEM from any Toyota Gen2/3 and use that for a couple of years. I think they go for around 100 bucks on Ebay and very easy to install yourself.
