As some of you know, I have a CarPC installed on my SC430. One of the features I've added to it is an OBD-II interface; can even display the read information on the screen in the form of virtual gauges.
One feature I've never used, until today, is the ability of the interface to read and clear trouble codes.
Well, sure enough, on the way to work today, my Check Engine, VSC, and VSC Off lights all come on at once (a very disconcerting sight, if you haven't seen it!)
When i got to work, I pulled the code via the CarPC and got...
"P0442 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)"
A quick Google search on this error code got me...
A code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
* Other small leak in EVAP system
* Faulty vent o-ring seal
So, I go back down to the car (parked in the garage at work) and checked the gas cap. Sure enough, it was loose!!
Then I went back upstairs and promptly called my wife....who had borrowed the car for a weekend trip (and was the last person to put gas in it!)
One trip to the dealership saved! Thank you technology!
