I bought a used 6.1 Nav disc off eBay, with a little wear on it... and upgraded from my original 2002 disc.
It will show my location on the screen, but will not allow me to enter anything, like destination or home location, etc. Anything involving an entry is greyed out.
I thought it might be due to scratches on the disc, so I was going to return it to the seller, but if others have had the same problem with a brand new disc then maybe the disc isn't the issue.
Could it be that I got the wrong disc? The dealer gave me the part# & that's what I got. Not sure what happens when you try to use the wrong disc version.
Maybe I jumped to high a version at once? Somehow I doubt that's the problem.
Any help on this would be appreciated? Sadly my next step will be a dealer, but I was hoping to avoid that.
cheers,
frank

I went the "cheap" route and tried a copied DVD from an E-bay dealer when upgrading my '02 NAVI disc. It loaded then the screen and menus locked up. It was basically useless. I reurned the disc and got a refund.
I ordered a new dealer disc from Carson Toyota (sponsor) and it has worked flawlessly. The price from the dealer was $270 but it was worth it.
Apparently the NAVI DVD discs are very tempermental and only OEM discs seem to work every time. Good Luck!

Search this forum for years of talk about upgrading the NAV with new data discs.
I don't know how a DVD that is kept in the player can "have a little wear on it." A DVD is read by light, and the surface cannot get scratched or worn.
If it does not work, return it to the seller. I recall no posts here reporting that new Discs from a dealer did not work. The problems here arise from DVD copies and from those purchased through eBay, where the sellers don't always know the limitations of the version they are selling, and where sometimes the disc is some kind of a bootleg or homemade copy.
A new version for gen 2/3 should be out in October. Your best, though most expensive bet, would be to get that from a dealer, either in person or on line (e.g.: Seawell, which can take your order on line or on the phone - I think Seawell is in Texas, but I'm not sure).
You cannot jump versions too fast; people upgrade at various intervals, and the discs are made to upgrade the system from any previous version.
As to what is wrong, I have no idea and have not seen reports of this before. You could be using a bad DVD, or the wrong DVD, or a crappy copy, or you could have turned off the car while the OS upgrade was in progress, or that could be something else. If you are lucky, installing a correct new disc will solve the problems.
Good luck.

The reason I am leaning toward 6.1 & not 7.1+ is from what I have read here about the Nav lock out & how the work-around to it is disabled after 6.1
Thanks one & all for the advice so far. This forum is great (and so is the car)...
