Default 2009 Nav Update Disc

Will the first person who gets the 2009 Nav Update Disc please post a message in the forum? I'm thinking of buying it, but only if they have updated a couple of major new intersections where I live. I'm hoping to get someone to check this for me before I shell out the cash to buy it. Thanks.

Is it out yet? I saw that Sewell was taking "pre-orders" for it but, has it actually been released?

Even if they haven't done the full Wilson Bridge and Springfield interchage update, I'm still getting it. My maps are 2 years old.

I have the 2009 NAV update, Ver 8.1, and it's running fine, but I don't know if I am the first person to get it, who is really the guy you wanted to hear from, for some reason.
Nevertheless, I'd be glad to check some landmarks for you and give you info on what the screen shows. Heck, with some time on my hands, I could even give you some photos of what the screen shows at selected addresses.

Let me know. Send me a PM if this starts to get, as it seems, to be of not much general interest.

I have been fixing a 02 model. I am not sure which edition I have. How does one know? Also if I have the first edition can I go to the brand new update without any problems? Thanks

Here's the deal on the '02 cars.
Early models had the Gen 2 system, and later models had the Gen 3 system. Both use the same data disc, so there is no problem there.
Early Gen 2 systems shipped with Ver 1.01 data. You can tell which data disc you have by, obviously, looking at the disc itself, or by going to the info screen and pressing the data button. The screen will read out the version of the disc in the system.
If you have ver 1 and update, the new DVD will also update the Operating System. After the update, the ver 1 disc is no good - the system will never again be able to read it, and you cannot roll back the OS update, not that you would want to. I mention this because there is a belief that once you put in a new data disc, the system will not read an older data disc. That is only true for those who are updating from version 1. I have gone back and forth between ver 5 and the new ver 8 with no problems.
My understanding is that any data disc after 1 contains the OS update. I went from 1 to 2 to 5 to 8, so I'm no expert, but my version 5 and version 8 data discs all contained an insert that cautioned that if updating from ver 1, the old ver 1 disc would not be able to be used after the update. No caution is expressed regarding other versions and, as noted, I have gone back and forth between 5 and 8 with no problems.
That's about all I know about updating the '02 cars.

Default What is the going price for the update?

Thanks for the info on the 02. i will check to see what version I have. I am missing so many roads on the original disk, but hate the inability to change on the fly. I have even contemplated a garmin which will not be as stealthy, but much easier to use.

If your car is an '02 model and is missing many roads, it's probably because you are still using he disc that came with the car (Ver 1 or Ver 2), in which case it's time to update regardless of other circumstances (unless your longest drive is 10 miles or less).
I don't know what you mean by change on the fly, nor do I know why a NAV system should be stealthy, unless you mean "not an ugly add-on stuck to the windshield with wires dangling."

i know it has the original disk, have never upgraded

on the fly = input address while operating vehicle

stealthy = you are correct

I know a number have complained about the look of the GPS. I'm wondering if anyone has removed the GPS and put in an aftermarket $200 GPS instead. For instance, I saw a 4.3" Nokia GPS with NavTeq maps today for $95. The GPS had integrated Bluetooth, Video, MP3, Traffic and even an FM tuner to integrate the GPS into your radio.

If my GPS fails for some reason, I'll explore this route because I'm not spending $1000 to get the system up and running again.

Great point, having just bought an 02 sc with the original nav, it is a major step down from my garmin nuvi. I wish I could just retrofit the garmin into the nav space. Since this is not possible, and I don't want the dangling wires; I'm just going to settle for having the crapier nav!
For those with garmin, how does it compare to, say, the nav update 5?
