ASFAIK their meaning (symbol) dates back to the Samurai. The knot in particular is of a symbolic meaning, good luck etc. The gold rope is also more symbolic then any other colour. I presume they only came in gold originally.

But latter and current design more associated with the Japanese mafia, not sure if thats good or bad
