I'm just curious about the star CENTERS, as a replacement to the pie plates,, not the whole wheel.

I'm not sure what your question is, but the "star centers" are a replacement for the pie plates. The whole substitution process takes about 15 minutes, if you work slowly.
Nobody would replace the whole wheel and then put the star centers on the replacements.

I understand the star centers are a replacement for the pie plates. Some of the previous threads were off topic talking about total wheel replacement. How can one get the "star centers" if they want to switch from the pie plates. At the time, ( 05), was there a choice between the two?

They're on ebay all the time, in different colors (silver, black, gunmetal).

I have the pie plates with the disc center..I'm considering upgrading the discs with chrome star center caps..but there's another thread on here about how they had a lot of problems getting the disc off (they messed up/scratched the wheels in the process)..anyone who's done this change know what precautions or proper way to do it? or is it not that of a corrosive process

Here's the linker to that thread

It should be no problem to make the replacement. There are about 10 nuts that hold the pie plate to the wheel, and I think they are taken off with an allen wrench (included if you buy the set from the dealer, but it's just a regular old Allen wrench, although probably metric; available at any Home Depot or Lowe's.)
Take off the nuts, discard the pie plate (makes a middling frisbee) and use the same nuts to attach the new center.
I don't see how you could damage the wheel, unless the center was stuck to the wheel with road gunk and you used a giant screwdriver or other inappropriate tool to pry it off (brute force cybernetics). If it's stuck to the wheel, just remove it carefully.
The whole job should take about fifteen minutes, max.

How much have you got, new guy?
By which I mean, they are so common on eBay that you can pay just about what you want within a wide range from 100 to 600.
Good luck.
