I hear a similar sound. My brake fluid, however, is low (because I need new pads). Might this be the car compensating for the low fluid level? I observed today that if I'm standing still and pump the brakes 3 times, it will make the noise on the 3rd pump (as if something is resetting). I will have my brakes done in the next couple days and follow up

Absolutely it will. Anytime you bleed the brakes that motor will run continually as is tries to fill up the internal valves for the antilock system.

Thanks for all the great info and advice

The break pads are good, albeit better in front than back, but neither in need of replacement yet. And the purrr? It's not every time, but I'd say at least every third.

I think at this point chances are slim to none Lexus will step up to the plate, so I'll wait and see what happens next and if it gets worse.

Thanks again,
~Janine

i dont know if you guys mind me posting here, this may seem crazy but my car also does this but its a 93 sc400. and at stops slowing down it sounds like a electric purr sound is a perfect example. i always wondered what it was. i thought id say something showing it had to be something on both cars. my sound is more over in the passenger area and thats where my abs system is under the hood. it doesnt do it all the time but some. is this normal?

Hey Spyder, if I'm deciphering the posts here correctly, it seems it's just the anti lock system filling up which is normal unless it happens too much...

Pearlpower The noise is just the antilock system filling up which is normal to a degree. If it is occurring at every stop something is probably wrong.

sweet430-i have had good luck with luxury car mfg with a letter campaign to the service manager, dealer gm and a copy to their regional service manager (over the section of the US you are in, for Lexus). A nice professional letter/e-mail with your history of Toyota products and assertively suggesting fixing under warranty due to the closeness of expiration would not be too "crazy" to ask for? If you don't ask, you don't get!

Infiniti turned me down once, but then again, about three months beforehand they replaced a power steering rack and motor mounts at the tune of $3k at 70,000 miles, well beyond warranty! There definitely is something called wearing out your welcome!
